(To the Editor)
Some time ago I made the state
ment that Eugene would crow to be
a city of 35,000 inhabitants Inside of
five years, and one of the dally pa
pers published my statement, and
since that I have been frequently
asked, "Did I mean it?" Well, cer
tainly I did. A great many of your
people seem to think that I have
made a very foolish statement, that
it would be an Impossibility to In
crease Eugene to a city of 35,000 In
habitants. I am simply surprised
at the remarks that I have stirred
up; such as, "You the crazy, what
is there to bntld Eugene up, there
is nothing to back It,; if it grows to
be a town of 10,000 inhabitants, It
would stop there for the next 25
years. Another, "Say, where did you
get it? That pipe dream of yours.
I wish It was so, but you are stretch
ing it a little too much; it can't go
down." A banker shook his head
and remarked that Eugene, he was
afraid, was growing too fast already,
en that it would soon take a tumble.
Still another said: ".Man." man, you
surely do not believe that statement
of yours. Why, If I thought that
would come to pass 1 would sell out
all my Interests in Portland at two
thirds its actual value and Invest It
In Eugene." And dozens of other
remarks similar to the one above
have I heard, since I stirred up the
what I call men who are letting a
good thing pass through their hands.
Since I have been called down so
much and considered a false prophet
1 shall give a few of my reasons for
what I consider the natural result of
Eugene's growth. I don't consider
it a prophecy it is a simple deduc
tion, and it seems to be only the
newcomers who can understand the
new conditions of Eugene. 1 am well
aware of the fact that at various
times Eugene took on a small Inflat
ed boom and some of our citizens
who were here at that time lost mon
ey and courage, and they cannot un
derstand that the present movement
is the natural result of the progress
of time, resultant from various caus
es. In that day you had a large num
ber of citizens who did not care to
see anv great movement toward a
city. Again, California and Wash
ington were pushing forward ttieir
respective countries, nnd they had
plentv of money to down any move
ments that would detract from them.
They were pushers and they got there
bv getting the attention (if the poo
pie or all the country. Hut now the
conditions are all different. Cai for-
nia is orettv well supplied ami i ''
are thousands who are disappom mi
with her. and who are now looking
for other fields.
These are niv deductions of Hie
facts that will make Eugene a city
of 35,000 inside of five years: 1.

Advertisements, Like Clocks,

Curious thing about It Is that
