NEARING MONROE,
COMING TO EUGENE
There Is going to he a great cele
bration over at Monroe before long
by t-.e people of that vlclnltv. and!
there will he Ju.st cause for the blg -
goal time ever held In that section,
says the llurrisburg Bulletin. In less
than a month, perhaps In two weeks
Monroe will have a railroad. The
toot-toot of a real steam whistle
the squeak of eccaping air, the grind
ing of tightened brakes and the tin-
Intelllgable jtation call of the brake
man will signal the arrival of the
"varnished cars" at Monroe. And the
people will be glad.
Just why this railroad has not been
constructed years ago Is something
of a wonder. Kor years and years
the country has been as thickly set
tled as It Is today. In fact years ago
the output of grain from the terri
tory which the road taps was greater
than It Is today or ever will he again.
Of course this road will he the means
of settling the country more thickly.
I.Ike other parts of the valley the
farms are too large and the owners
are ready to see more people come.
Smaller farms and better farming Is
the watchword.
Hut regarding the railroad. It
stretches otit from Corvallls over
eighteen miles of absolutely levol
country. In all that distance there
has not been the need of a single
deep cut or heavy fill. Only one
bridge of Importance la needed along
the way, that across the creek at
Corvallls. Naturally work has pro
gressed rapidly on the construction
of a line so easily built. The grading
Is practically completed to Monroe.
The rails are within three of four
miles. Awaiting their arrlvul are
thousnnds of bushels of grain und
Immense uinounts of produce for
shipment.
That the road will be built on to
Eugene without much delay Is al
most certain. At least this Is what
the people of this section of country
fervently hope.
As a result of the coming of the
now road the people of Monroe,
which hns heretofore been simply a
small trading point, are beginning
to see visions of a progressive town.
It bits n large territory surrounding
It that will support a town of con
siderable size. Messrs. Wtlhelm &
Sons, the leading firm In the burg.
are already enlarging their facilities
for handling n much larger volume
of business. They operate a goo 1
sized flouring mill there and the Im
orovenionts In converting this from
the old reel sifter to a plan sifter In
volves an expenditure of $4,000. The
cunning factory over there, which ta
co-operative, will be running fill
blast next season. Other Industries
are sure to start up In the menn
tlmo. In fact Monroe will have n
plane on the map In another year of
considerable importance.

AUTO RACE IS
ARRANGED FOR
Cincinnati, O . Sept. 5. One week
I from tomorrow H the date fixed for
'he wildest, rrc-nest and most des-
lperale automobile race ever seen,
i The acene of the contest probably
, will be the Latouia race track, though
this has not been decided definitely
The drivers will be Barney Old field,
the well known track racer, and John
J. Ityan, a noted turf plunger.
The contest will he absolutely
unlq'ie In the history of automobile
racing. No rules whatever will gov
ern the conduct of the drivers after
the starter sends them away. The
man who finishes first will win the
race. No cognizance will be taken
of fouls, accidents or anything else
which may happen on the track. If
Oldflelrl wants to cut across In front
of Hyan he may do so, risking his
life and that of his opponent. Kyan
has equal privileges. The contest,
in fact, will be only a question as
to which of the two rarers has the
most nerve, also the most luck.
The match is the result of an ar
gument In which the two racers he
came involved some time ago. The
race will consls t of three mile heats,
the winner of two taking the race
and a side bet of $2,500. The cars
to be used are exact duplicates.
