The Kastern market tor caacara
hark shows a flight ni-ward tendency,
quotations in New V..rk having risen
Z to 3c wilhin the past week or two.
Loral dealers, however, report no
change in the situation on the coast.
Tin peeling beai-on Is now near the
end. and It is bejevwj that there will
j be a fair average output despite the
low prices that have prevailed for a
year. That the local market will to
some extent respond to the advances
In the Fast la believed in some quar
ter.. Mil I feed Are Very Firm.
"It la a question of supply," Baid
an oficlal of a local milling com
pany today. "We could handle a
good deal more feed of all sorts
than we are getting al present prices,
hut the supply is short In all quar
ters, for the reason that the mills of
the coast generally are running short
of capacity. The demand, which has
been strong all summer, showg no
sign of weakening, and prices Just
now would seem to be about as high
as they well could be."
Kkk Market Is Stfffer.
There Is a stlffer tone in the local
egg market, and In some instances
receivers are able to secure a slight
ly higher value than that quoted.
The strength of the market is quite
pronounced and therefore it begins
to look as if there will be a general
rise In values soon.
Cheese market Is holding rather
firm with the outward movement
quite heavy and holders showing no
disposition to press their goods upon
the market.
fliickeiiN Not So linn.
While Front street merchants are
still asking 13c for hens and 15c for
spring chicks, the market Is disposed
to show signs of a drag, and there
fore dealers are not willing to allow
stocks to accumulate. For this rea
son buyers 'have the field almost to
themselves.
Dressed veal market os showing
dullness as well as signs of weakness,
and prices are easier. Dressed hogs,
however, are firm at top values.
Wheat In Firm.
The wheat market was very firm
yesterday, hut exporters quoted the
present range of prices. HuslnesB
continues on a rather small scale.
Oats were firmer at the board of
twide yesterday, with $4.12' of
fered for December, an advance of
about a cent over the previous day's
figures. September wheat was un
changed and December was Vfc cent
lower. There were no changes in
the barley prices bid.
Portland Livestock.
Portland Union Stockyards, Sept.
2. Whatever the future may show,
the present outlook for livestock Is
of the very best. All lines are dis
posed to show strength and for top
stuff Itj Is invariably the rule for top
quotations to rule. This is true of
every line, but perhaps the strong
est tone is noted In bogs, where the
arrivals are scant and are far below
the requirements of the trade.
The fact that Kastern hogs are
constantly rolling toward the Pa
cific coast seems to have no effect
whatever toward changing Portland
or other Pacific coast hog values,
and for the best stuff the receivers
are experiencing not the slightest
difficulty in Instantly disposing of
nil arrivals.
Cattle market shows rather 1 llteml
arrivals for the 2 4 hours, but the i
tone of the market Is so good that it j
is having no effect upon prlce-mak-j
lug. I lest, steers are still firmly -held I
at 54 and all arrivals of that quality
can easily bring the price. For some
tune there has been a dearth of well
finished steers and for this reason
the ma ret. Is unusually firm.
While there were fair arrivals of
sheep today, the fact that none came
during the preceding 4S hours was
a great aid to t he niuret and t he
lone for good stuff is better than
ever. Itest wethers are moving free
ly at $:t.50 and values In other
branches of t ho sheep market are
holding rigid.
Wool Is Firm.
Host on, Sept. i. I a tea! dealers
report a slightly better time In the
wool niuret with increased inquiry
ana netier sales. .Nearly all grades
cf domestic- wool hold steady, the I
best demand being for quarter-bred
fleeces, while a sizeable movement In
Australia Is also reported.
