SCROFULA
Swollen glands aWit the neck, weak eyes, pale, waxy complexions,
running sons and ulcers, skin diseases, and general poor health, are tha
usual ways in which Scrofula is manifested. The disease beinif deeply
intrenched in the Wood often attacks the bones, resulting in White Swelling,
or hip disease, and the scrofulous and tubercular matter so thoroughly
destroys the healthful properties of the blood that Scrofula sometimes
terminates in consumption, an incurable disease. The entire circulation
tR-ing contaminated, the only way to cure the trouble is to thoroughly
purify the blood and restore the circulation to a strong, healthy state.
S. S. S. is the very lest treatment for Scrofula ; it renovates the entire
blood supply and drives out the scrofulous and tubercular deposits. S. S. S.
is the greatest of all blood purifiers, and it not only goes right down to the
very bottom of the trouble anil removes the cause, but it supplies the weak,
diseased blood with the healthful properties it is in need of, and in this way
builds up weak, frail, scrofulous persons and makes them strong and healthy.
S. S. S. is a gentle, safe, vegetable preparation and is suited for persons of
any age, liook on the blood containing information about Scrofula and any
medical advice free. THE SWIFT SPECIFIC CO., ATLANTA. OA.

LlBbon, Aug. 26. The Lisbon
newspapers are full of a sensational
scandal which has Just been disclosed
and which Involves one of the oldest
and most prominent families of Por
tugal. Two or three years ago a;
noted society beauty, daughter of a j
rich banker, married" Count Mar-1
galho, who belongs to the old nobll-j
Ity of Portugal, and' held the post
of lord-ln-waltlng to the' king. I
For about a year the- two lived j
happily together, but last September I
the Countess and her child., aged I
five munths. suddenly disappeared
and nothing was seen or heard of
them. Wnen questioned the Count
always returned an evasive answer.
Eventually so many rumors became
current that the police took the mat
ter In hand. . It was impossible that
tne matter could be kept quiet, as
tne parties were so well known, hav
ing frequently entertained Klng-Car-os
and Queen Amelia at their bran
tlful aeat In the Alemjeto. In addi
tion, the Count was well known for
his Jealous disposition, and fears
were entertained for the safety- of:
the Countess.
Finally the police determined to
break Into the house. There, after
a long search, they discovered the
Countess and her child, Imprisoned
In a small garret. Brought dbwn
stairs. It was discovered' she had
changed Into a broken down old wo
man. Her once beautiful features
were emaciated and worn, and' her
hair had turned completely white.
The servants, when questioned, con
fessed that the woman had been kept
a close prisoner for eleven months.
The CounteBs herself has been able
to give no explanation of the cruel
treatment of her husband, and It Is
feared that her mind is completely
gone. The doctors hold out very lit
tle hope of her recovery, but expect
the child will live.
The Count's defense is that his
wife allowed a naval officer to pay
too great attention to her. King
Manuel, who was to have pald'a visit
to the Count as soon as the court
went out of mourning, has notified
him that the visit will not take place,
and also that he is deprived' of his
court appointments and emoluments.
It Is bIbo probable that the Count
will be prosecuted criminally for his
Inhuman cruelty.
