except the unsupported statement of
the editor of the morning paper, who
admits he never even saw the stream.
Succlntly stated, the movement
for a gravity system supplied from
mev rreek is an honest attempt to
better deplorable conditions, while
ho nnnnsltlon is only the effort of a
private corporation and Its backers,
stockholders and bondholders, to fas
ion imon the community the curse of
a bad water supply for the sake of the
money it will put into the corpora
tion's treasury. No wonaer they
fear the. truth and want the facts
kept from the public; not that it
will "hurt the town" but because It
may defeat the accomplishment of
their purposes.
If the Willamette Valley Company
U to continue to control the water,
light, power and gas supply of .Eu
gene something likea decent service
ought to be given by them. ' The gas
pressure has become so poor that
for weeks the Guard's linotype Is
"frozen up" a gooa part of the time,
making it Impossible for us to set
type enough some aays to get the
paper to press in any creditable
shape. For some months after the
gas plant was Installed, the quality
01" gas furnished could not have been
better, but has steadily deteriorated
until this summer it could scarcely
be worse. Most of our people know
what trouble they have with lights
during the winter and some of them,
like the Guard, know how uncertain
the power is for half the year, al
though It is better during the sum
mer months. It is largely to over
come this handicap of poor, service
that the Guard is forced to double
its machinery facilities, so that a
shut down of two or three hours a
day from these causes will not crlp
ple us so severely in issuing a paper.
Why can't the Willamette Valley
Co. do something right? Is it be
cause they think our peoplo must
stand for it, and don't care for pub
lic sentiment, or because of incom
petency? Or is it a mixture of both?
After all, it seems that the much
abused millionaire is not to be over
looked by the enterprising cam
paign manager. And this must lie a
great consolation to the millionaire
who has been led to believe all a''ing
that he was to be permitted to re
tain his hard-earned money this year.
But not so. ye will go down in his
jeans and dig up with the sanit old
reluctance as of years gone by, when
the country was not engulfed in a
wave of high morality. And a:', ibis,
too, when he well knows that the
right hand 13 to be made avi'ie of
the work of the left. In oilier words
his contributions are to lie made
public after election.
Somewhere down Ent the other

THIS IS MY 7IST BIRTHDAY
Benjamin K, Wright
Benjamin Franklin Wright, who Is
known as the father of the prohib
itory amendment to the Iowa consti
tution, was born In Vernon, Ohio
August 20, 1837. In early life he
settled in Charles City, Iowa, ai.d
for nearly forty years he has edited
newspapers In that city. He served
as postmaster of Charles City for
thirteen years, receiving his commis
sion from President Grant in 1SC9.
But. It ls In the work of prohibiten
that Mr. Wright has achieved his
greatest fame. In 1SS"0, chiefly
through his efforts, the Iowa legisla
ture submitted the prohibitory
amendment to the people in spite of
the strong opposition of the liquor
Interests. It was carried by 30,000
majority. Mr. Wright was one of
the fearless speakers during that
struggle, and on several occasions he
was threatened with mob violence.
After the adoption of the amendment
Mr. Wright returned to his newspa
per work, which he has only recent
ly given up on account of failing
health.
