I Deiieve orjatt win uo mmeo,
was the opening statement of Lee M. "No man has been more misu,iot..,r ,Y , , ,'"ss ''?!. L" tlu' alU'or
T,.vl. ehalrman of the Lane eountv than Bryan in the nn L" "l " L"a When he oomes hack
Democratic central committee, who
returned this morning from the noti
fication ceremoles at Lincoln, while
talking to a Guard reporter ' today.
"LaFollette is winning more votes
for Bryan than forty Democratic
speakers," was another remark drop
ped by the local Democratic leader.
Travis heard a speech by LaFol
lette in Lincoln, and he said that the
partisan Republicans would swear
under their breath, while the Demo
crats would cheer wildly with the La
Follette Republicans. While LaFol
lette promised to support Taft imme
diately after his nomination. Attor
ney Travis quoted him as saying that
he( La Follette) and Bryan were
working for the same common cause
and common ends.
While not making any direct ap
peal to the people for Bryan, by cre
ating a distrust In the Republican
party and by hammerlnk away at
such leaders as Long, of Kansas, who
has been downed by La Follette, and
Burkett, of Nebraska, the Wiscon
sin senator is making .thousands of
votes for the great "commoner" all
over the United States. Moreover,
in a general way, the Wisconsin
man's sentiments are much the same
as the Nebraskan's, he not even hes
itating to criticise Roosevelt for per
mttteing the Freeland-Aldrlch bill to
pass without the president's veto.
Hearst a lllesNing
"Hearst, so far. in' the minds -of
the big Democratic lexers," said
Mr. Travis, "has been productive of
nothing but good. Instead of disor
ganizing the party, he has joined all
factions, the conservative and more
radical members. The Independence
party will cut no figure. The papers
may have some influence, but they
will be offset by such publications as
the New York World, which, be
cause Hearst has declared against
Bryan, has declared for the Nebras-
"Then. too, the Hearst papers are
losing circulation, and their adver
tising rates are falling, which shows
how the tide is turning. Indeed.
Mack and Nixon, who are the chief
organizers at Lincoln , expressed
themselves as heartily hoping that
Hearst would keep up the fight
against Bryan until the end of the
campaign.
"The convention of the Independ
ence party," continued Travis, "was
a paid one. Two members from Cal
ifornia with whom I talked on the
train, said they had gotten their ex
penses paid, and would support Bry
an just the same. At San Francisco
they have signed statements to the
same effect.
"On the trains It Is easy to see
how the tide is turning. Regardless
of what has been said, a great part
of the traveling and commercial men
are fighting for Bryan, as are many
big commercial houses which no one
would ever think would line up In
the Democratic column.
"Organized labor is getting be
hind the Democraic ticket as well as
many big finis. Gompers, despite j
what has been said of him, is exert-
ing a tremendous Influence, because i
behind him there is so much truth
that is Irrisistible.
