graduated in 1803.
Made ensign October 1
1863; lieutenant, July
1866; lieutenant commander'
July 187S; captain, June 2l

. Participated in attack on
Fort Fisher January 15
1865.
Earned his title of "Fight
ing Bob" during the year
1891, when he was in com
mand of the Yorktown at
Valparaiso, Chill.
During the war with Spain
he was commander of the
Iowa, .taking active part in
the destruction of Cervera's
fleet, July 3. 1S98.
Washington, D. C, Aug. 18. The:
name of as gallant and efficient an!
officer as ever wore the American:
naval uniform was removed from the:
active list today when Hoar Adml-j
ral Robley I). Evans, known the
world over as "Fighting Hob," was!
retired for age. Admiral Evans took!
the great Atlantic battleship fleet:
around Cape Horn last winter, audi
his official career virtually ended
with the arrival of the fleet at San :
Francisco. Since that time he lias
been on leave of absence and has
been sojourning at various health!
resorts in an effort to conquer a bad j
attack of rheumatism, an ailment I
from which he has suffered a number
of years.'
With the single exception of Admi
ral Dewey "Fighting Bob" Evans
was undoubtedly the best known and
most popular officer the American
navy has known since the heroes of
the civil war period passed from ac
tive life. Admiral Evans In recent
years has been known as the reliable
man of the navy, for there was al-i
ways assurance that he would dis
charge his duty with courage and
patriotism, tact and diplomacy
should his mission become a delicate
one. Throughout his career he was
adored by his men, and he also knew
how to hold the favor of ashing
ton. Admiral Evans began fighting in
the civil war, when he was still in
his teens, and completed his record
of actual hostilities by ithe great
work he did with the battleship Iowa
at Santiago. In the interval and since
that time he rendered his country ev
ery kind of service.
Evans went to the Annapolis Acad
emy In 1S60, and a year later came
the outbreak of the civil war. The
mother of Robley demanded that he
resign from the United States service.
and fight for the soutn. his oroir.
er had espoused the cause of the con-,
federacy. But Robley dwlktedj ln ta'-
Jor of Washington, and annnimed
his determination to Matul bv the
Inion. it was a decUi thai ,

many years, before h: mother for
gave him.
His brother fought gallantly for
the South and was twice wounded
He did not share his mothers in
dignation at the young naval officer
and the two brothers never wavered
in theii friendship, despite the diver
gence of their political views.
Evans' active servlc.. began in the
West Indies, where he commanded a
yacht sent to search for Confederate
privateers. He was first under fire
a: Fort Fisher, and was wounded in
the attack upon that .stronghold. It
was at first decided that both of his
legs would have to be amputated,
which would, of course, have ended
his naval career, but even then Evans
had that swiftness of action which
was later to bring him distinction.
As soon as the doctors had commu
nicated to him their decision to take
off his legs, he drew his revolver
and announced that he would blow
off the head of the first man who
dared approach him. Adopting new
measures, the physicians workel
with him and managed to restoie
him to health with both legs Intact.
In 1S91 Evans Increased his lame
by his conduct in Valparaiso harbor.
He was ln charge of the little gunboat
REAR ADMIRAL EVANS.
Yorktown, during the trying period
when the least slip might have pre
cipitated war between the two coun
tries, a conflict that would have en
tailed serious consequences, since It
was no secret that Great Britain at
that time sympathized with the
South Americans. In the teeth of the
protests of the Chilean eorernment
Commodore Evans took on his boat
the refugees from the American leea
tion, and when the natives threaten
ed reprisals he announced that at the
first hint of attack he would bom
bard the city. The world admired
his spunk, and Washington learned
that in "Fighting Bob" It had a man
who could be trusted In any crisis,
PARKER PASSED THROUGH
EUGENE LAST NIGHT
Judge Alton B. Parker passed
through here on the early morning
train from California to Portland,
but there was not a soul to wake him
up to give him a bouquet in Eugene.
Indeed, so silent and unpretentious
was his passing through that the lo
cal Southern Pacific officers this
morning did not know that an ex-
candidate for the presidency of the
United States had been rolled over
the rails during the night. Judge Par
ker speaks tonight In Portland on
the political issues of the present
day. He is a strong supporter of
Brvan, who seems to have won every
faction of his party to his cause with
the exception of Hearst.

bout tonight when Stanley Ketchel

Occidental Club for a contest of 20
rounds. Both are reported to be In
excellent shape for the go. The men

is a help to Thomas, and it Is the
general opinion that he will make a
better showing against Ketchel than
did Hugo Kelly.
