It was In Germany that the fireless
cook-stove was perfected, and now
comes news from a special consular
agent that the Germans are making
a'fireless railroad locomotive. It is
equipped with a boiler after the man

water in It is heated to the neces
sary temperature from a stationary
plant. Enough power can be stored
in it to operate It four hours for
switching purposes in a railroad yard,
and it does not take more than fif
teen minutes to charge it. Now, if
somebody will get to work and invent
a fireless cigarette, there will- be lit
tle more to ask for in this world, for
most property loss through the acts
of careless smokers will be prevented.
Portland has never been sorry that
she Issued several millions of bonds
to secure Bull Run water, but It will
be recalled that private water com

force her people to continue using
impure river water. Eugene is now
in the throes of such a fight as Port

as might be expected, the private
corporation, is contesting every
point.. However, it Is encouraging
to reflect that In nearly ail such
contests the people finally win.

look for the mis to tell them

Sometime a clock does not

misleading.
Curious thing about it Is thut
a merchant who would think it
