Colonel Geo. 0. Yoran, of the
Fourta Infantry, O. N. G., and Com
panies A and C returned home on the
6 o'clock train this morning from
the American Lake, maneuver field,
after ten days of most creditable
military work. All the men were In
the finest possible physical condition,
tanned and hardy after the long
marches in the dust and heat. No
sickness was reported from exhaus
tlon or from the bivouac Monday
night in the bitter cold.
From the hour the troops reach
ed camp until they entrained for
their return to Oregon, they displayed
military capacity In every move. Ar
riving at the maneuver field Monday,
August 3, the two Oregon regiments
threw up their camps in the course
of a few hours, and were ready for
the field at daylight the next morn
ing. Commissary and quartermaster's
departments were handled with sffl
clency and there was no shortage of
supplies or inferiority of rations it
camp or In tho field at any time.
Il'ith regiments did peculiarly ef
fective work In the period of simulat
ed w;irfare of Monday and Tuesday.
They were on opposite aides, hut did
not n;me In contact with ench other
nn the battlefield. The Third was re
sponsible for the defeat of the llhie
army on Monday, while the Fourth
Infantry, In conjunction with the
First and Sixth United States Infan
try regiments, won Tuesday morn
ing's engagement for the Dine force
The boys all say this was the best
encampment as regards military in
struction they ever attended, and are
not complaining of the hard work
during their ten days of service.
