WRIGHT'S NEW
AEROPLANE PLIES
LIKE A BIRD
Lcnians, France, Aug. S. Wilbur
Wright, of Dayton. Ohio, made a
(IlKlit computed at i to a's kilo
rt,.,rr..a t' 17 r.o!em with his a-ro-
plane here this morning. The offi
cial lime of the flight was 1:4.
Throughout the flight Mr. WriBht
had perfei t control of the machine.
No attempt was made for a dis
tance record, the only object of the
fllKht being to try out the aeropljne
While flying through the air Wright
demonstrated, or so it appeared to
the apectatorg. that he was absolute
mauler of the airship, first soaring
and then shooting downward and
then mounting at will, until finally
after completing the two circles, he
came down easily to earth.
The performance was greeted with
a burst of cheers from u Htnall num
ber of peoiiie invited to view the ex
periment. Wright was warmly con
gratulated by all the experts, who
siyled the flight a wonderful exhi
bition of aviation.
All Doubters Silenced
The successful flight made by Wil
bur Wright with his aeroplane today
puts an end to a long, anxious wait
In America and Kurope to see what
the Wright brothers were capable of
doing. In Kurope the "mysterious
Wrights" have been an absorbing
problem for aviution enthusiasts, uud
they have Interested the representa
tives of the various governments.
The long postponement of u public
exhibition of what the Americans had
to show the world aroused the live
liest comment and from some quar
ters of skepticism, a Paris newspaper
only last night referring to the "Hluff
Wright Brothers, of whom every
body has been talking for many
years, but who, us yet, "have not
made good."
Weather conditions for the first
test were splendid. The sky was blue
and without a cloud, and a gentle
nurthwest wind was blowing.

afternoon when the aeroplane, which
Is the same as that used In the Unit
ed States, was brought out of Its
shed and mounted on a small, single
wheeled chariot, which In turn was
resting on a single rail on the
ground. After a preliminary test of
the apparatus, Mr. Wright declared
all was ready and took a posliton be
side the motor.
By means of a falling weight ar
ranged on a beam erected on the
ground and connected with cords run
ning to It, the chariot was started
running over the rail, and the aer
oplane, having thus been given a for
ward motion, ascended like a bird to
a height of about forty feet. Then
it swerved and turned in its course,
and started up the field. It dipped
gracefully up and down, attaining a
height of 60 feet, and then descended
to between thirty and forty feet. .lr.
Wright thus twice circled the field,
and then, stopping the motor, brough
and then, stopping the motor,
brought the aeroplane directly In
