GOOD ROADS
NOW IN BOHEMIA
MINING DISTRICT

WEEKS' jjTAV IX DISTlt'ltT
AUTO.MOIill.KS (X)ll.) KASll.Y
KKACH TOP OK MOUNTAIN. I
Herbert Leigh. t.hs well-known
mininir engineer of this city, re
turned home t;r.t.lay night from
the Bohemia mint"!, wnere he had
been working for four weeks on the
North Falrview property. He Is en
thusiastic over the present condition
of the "Hardscrabble" road leading
to the mines. Until recently the
road has been rough and made trav
eling very disagreeable, but now, Mr.
Leigh says. It is as good as any prai
rie road In the county. To prove
this, he state:) that in coming out
of the district he rode on horseback
from the .North Eairvlew mine to
Wlldwood, a distance of 11 miles, in
three and a half hours, gring in a
trot, or galln'i all the way, whereas
frrmerly this was impossible on ac
count of the roughness of the road.
All the stamps and big rocks have
been removed the entire distance and
the road leveled so that an automo
bile could easily make the trip to
the top or the mountain.
Much Work at Mayflower.
Mr. Leigh stated that the owners
of the Mayflower mine are building
a first-class road to their property,
this being a continuation of the
Noonday road. The Mayflower peo
ple are getting ready to install a re
duction plant and they have recently
developed a very large ledge of free
milling ore. They are also con
structing a big flume and an electric
power plant.
There Is greater activity In the dis
trict, M- Leigh says, than there has
been for some time past, and he ex
pects lively times there during the
next few years. The mountains were
never so beautiful as they are now
he says. Wild flowers abound in
profusion and the griss is more pro
lific than he has ever seen it in the
mnunU;r.s.
CARELESS SHOOTING
AT JUDKINS' POINT
Vcctoi-ilni' gttapnnnn nhnnt 10

played lack of judgment by careless
use of a gun at Judkins' Point. Two
canoes were on the mill race oppo-c-Hq
n-hnra itia hnnttnfr occurred and
one of the bullets struck the water
not over three feet from one oi me
canoes, and right in the path of the
other canoe. It was not a stray bul
let, as the report seemed to come
from just a few yards above.
It seems as though some effort
should be made by the officers
to apprehend and deal with these
parties in such a manner that this
will be altogether stopped. This Is
not the first occurrence of this kind,
but It happens repeatedly. The au
thorities should not wait until some
fatality occurs, but act now and pre

Of the total number of deaths in New York City in 1870, 50 per cent, were

Until 18 97 no counterfeits or imitations of Castoria appeared on drug store shelves,
