anchor, the flagship Connecticut lend

The city was early astir, (excur
sion trains brought large crowds
from Wellington, Christchnrch and
olhor points, the number of visitors
exceeding all past records In the his
tory of this city. Thousands Jour
neyed out to tho headlands to catch
the first glimpse of the fleet. The
waters of the harbor were dotted ev
erywhere with yachts and excursion
crafts of every description, while the
wharves and hniltlliiitx ntonir tho
' waterways were thronged with men.

buildings the Stars and Stripes and
the I'nlon .lack floated side by side.
The American colors were to tie seen
everywhere and many of the people
met In the streets carried tiny Ameri
can flags.
The arrival of the powerful vessels
nf war afforded a marine spectacle
magnificent beyond anything ever
seen before 111 these waters. The Con
necticut, plowing her way majes
tically through the channel was fol
lowed Into tho harbor by tho Min
nesota, Kearsage. Kentucky, Ver
mont and other vessels of the fleet.
Around and about them everywhere
the ttoats of the excursion fleet,
which kept up a const.int tooting of
whlitli-e and a display of daylight
fireworks.
As soon as the flagship came to
anchor she was boarded by the roceiw
tlon committee, who formally wel
comed Admiral Sporry and his offi
cers and men to partake of New Zea
