Quite a number of the fishermen of
this section met In the Masonic hall
last Tuesday to consider a proposi
tion from O. W. Hurd, with a view
to bulldlnK a cannery In the place of
the one destroyed by fire last week,
says the Florence West.
The plan proposed hy Mr. Hurd
was to organize a company on the
co-operative plan, each of the fisher
men to purchase and own one or
more shares of stock. Mr. Hurd ag
reeing to take the remainder him
self. Of course each stockholder
must agree to sell his fish to the
company's cannery at a price to be
agreed upon. Mr. Hurd also agreed
that at toe close of the season If any
of the men want to dispose of their
shores, that he will buy them.
After some discussion of different
mattorB connected with the enter
prise, the price of salmon for the
present season was fixed at two cents
per pound, for Chinook 12 He apiece
for sllversldes.
Subscription papers were then
drawn up and circulated and some
twenty-five to thirty of the fisher
men signed them, each agreeing to
take one share of $100 of the Btoek
of the cannery. Those who prefer
to do so are to pay for their stock In
tlah. and are to receive cash for wnat
fish they deliver after deducting the
price of their stock.
It was decided to elect five direc
tors to have charge of the business
of the company. A ballot was taken
and O. W. Hurd, W. W. Neely, Haul
W. Nlcolle, J. C. Beck, and Julius
Nellsen were elected directors.
The meeting adjourned and a meet
ing of the directors was immediately
held and O. W. Hurd elected presi
dent and I). M. Kemp secretary of
thet company.
It has not been decided whether to
erect a new building this fall or
whether some other building will be
fitted up and used for canning this
season.

New York, Aug. 8. The Amateur
Athletic Union of the United States
will break athletic relations with the
British Amateur Athletic Association.
This was practically decided upon to
day. There Is a possible chance that
an apology may patch matters, but
now it looks like a 100 to 1 shot.
The government Board of the Am
ateur Athletic I'nlon of the United
States is now taking a mall vote on
the question and It seems that the
vote will be unanimous to have noth
ing more to do with the British Ama
teur Athlotlc Association. Charles
E. Evans, who arrived from Europe
on Friday, brought back the details
that proicd the last straw. He showj
how unfairly the Americans were
treated by the British during the
Olympic championships, it Is almost
a foregone conclusion that Carpen
ter will be accorded the amateur
championship and as such will go In
to the book of records. This will
bring forth a protest from the Brit
ishers and an open war will be the
result.
