month. It Is Mr. Harrlman's desire
to kill a bear while In this section,
and game conditions are such that he
should have his wish gratified. More
bear have been killed In the moun
tains of Klamath county this year
than for several years previous, and
from all parts of the county come the
reports that Mr. Bruin Is very much
in evidence, and pays sheep camps
and pleasure seekers visits at times
when he is least expected. Deer are
much more numerous than they have
been for years, and almost every par
ty of hunters that takes to the hills
succeeds in bagging one or more. The
game laws are being strictly enforced
and few deer are being unlawfully
killed.
THOMAS A. KIMSOX TO
VISIT PACIFIC COAST
New York, Aug. 4. To gratify a
lifelong wish, Thomas A. Edison, the
great inventor, has decided to quit
temporarily his laboratory at Llewel
lyn, N. J., and go on a roving com
mission to the Pacific coast, where he
will engage in scientific reasearch
free from all commercialism. The
change does not mean that he will
cease work at all, but that he will de
vote himself purely to science. Edi
son, accompanied by his wife, will
leave his home late In August for the
journey.

able to take Mr. Paine back to civil

bucket. Mr. Fline was a close sec
ond and followed on to Eugene Wed
nesday. It Is safe to say the above
gentlemen will give Loudon a wide
berth In the future.
Wilts Owen has changed his occu
pation to father confessor of the
camp. He confesses his own sins and
washes them away In the bath tub
Captain Sachs and wife, Mrs E
Bailey and Mrs. It. Walt bid farewell
to London last Saturday, after three
weeks' sojourn here.
J. P. Kirk and wife, of Smithfield,
and John Milllorn and family, of
Junction City, came up last Sunday
and pitched their tent, Intending to
stay a month.
Messrs. Charles and FranL Hadley,
of Crow, who have been hunting and
fishing on Crescent Lake, came up by
London yesterday and escorted their
wives home.
A. M. Gilbert and family and A.
W. Gilbert, wife and daughter, Mrs.
StryJter, of Eugene, camped here Sun
day night. Monday morning they
went on up the river to Cougar Bend
to hunt and fish and gather berries.
They will return here luter and camp
for some time. Look out for a bear
story.
The Black Butte mine has closed
down for lack of wood. They will
make a thorough clean-up of the
slippery metal before starting up
again.

evening at the hall, and combined
business with pleasure. , we suppose,
as they served ice cream and cake.
The society Is In a very flourishing

Kichard Cook had the misfortune
while crossing the railroad track
north of town to have his gasoline
engine struck by the local freight. It
seems that the engineer could not or
did not stop In time to avoid striking
the engine. Mr. Cook says he gave
ample signals to cause them to stop
before reaching the crossing.

Land fraud Indictments against
the following were dismissed in fed
eral court at Portland yesterday:
Claud Thayer, Maurice Leach,
Thomas Coates, G. O. Nolan, Elbert
K. Brown, William H. Davis, Clark
E. Hadley, Walter J. Smith, John
Tuttle, Livy Stipp, Nellie Brown, Jos
eph Black, et al.
All of these Indictments with the
exception of those against Joseph
Black -and otliers, were brought by
Heney during his land fraud Inves
tigations more than three years ago.
Black and several others were In
dicted by W. C. Bristol when ho was
United tSates District Attorney. This
was known as the Wisconsin case.
The Circuit Court of Appeals, on ap
plication to remove from Wisconsin
to Portland for trial, held that the
Indictment was Insufficient. For this
reason Mr. Becker requested the dis
missal of this particular Indictment,
No. 4S45.
