And regarding the newspaper bus
iness there are many other matters
that it is worth while to call public
attention to. For instance It is said
frequently that a certain town 'sup
ports" one or two newspapers. Noth
ing could be further from the truth.
Newspapers are no longer objects of
charity but have come to be real busi
ness institutions, conducted along
the same lines as other commercial
enterprises. They sell news and ad
vertising space at fixed prices, and
both have become staple commodities.
The
Guard, for instance, pays out
$1650 per month (double what It was
two years ago) for running expenses,
$1400 of which is Bpent In Eugene,
largely In the salaries of well-paid
employes who in turn distribute it
among the business men. This mon-
ey Is gathered up all over Lane coun
ty and much of it comes irom a ais
tance in subscriptions, advertising
and Job work, so that Eugene, Instead
of "supporting" a' paper like The
Guard, actually derives a revenue
from it Just as It does from any oth
er manufacturing plant a woolen
mill or a sawmill. It is a payroll en
terprise that contributes to the
growth and prosperity of the oity.
Not only that, but the larger ana
better newspapers become the more
widely the town is advertised, attract
ing homeaeekers, increasing the vol
ume of business and enhancing prop
erty values. . -And
yet there are some business
men who never patronize a newspa
per. They advertise .on dealt walla
and get the UttHe stationery they use
printed by cheap Eastern shops, but
throw a fit when some customer
sends to a mail orded house for a
bill of goods. Possibly tlheir incon
sistency comeB from the fact that they
have never thought of these things;
at least it is charitable to suppose
se.
