GOMPERS PAYS
HIS RESPECT TO
POLITICAL FOES
Washington, July 30 "The report
that 1 ever said 1 would not deliver
the labjr vote t3 any political party
is an infamous lie." said Samuel
Gompers today. "Organized labor
is not only honest, but intelligent
enough to choose the party for Its
support which best reperesents its In
terests." Gompers went on to say
that the enemies of organized labor,
by spreading lies and misrepresenta
tions, mav injure him personally, or
even cause his dismissal as president
of the American Federation of Labor,
but that would not affect his course
in battling for the principles for
which he stands.
He said that he fully expected that
some would disagree with him and he
does not expect the labor world to
accept his conclusions In every in
stance. He expected to be criticised,
but did not believe the criticism
would be so unjust and contemptible.
Chairman Hitchcock, of the Re
publican committee, when asked as
to the truth of the report that a per
sonal campaign was to be waged
against Gompers, said that "noth
ing of the kind had been arranged."
LEAN D ERS WIN
GREAT BOAT RACE
Henley. July 31. The internation
al Olympic regatta ended today with
the big event of the meeting, tn
eight-oared race, in which the Bel
glans, after winning several heats,
were defeated by the Leanders. The
race was a battle of styles, and the
result convinces the Englishmen that
the old style of rowing is better.
