O. W. Hurd's talimn cannery, at
Acme, on the lower Siuslaw river, was
totally destroyed by fire early this
morning. The fire was fiiBt discov
ered about Ii o'clock and in a re
markably short time the building was
reduced to a mass of embers, there
being no flre-lightlng apparatus In
the tofa n. The hss .on the building
and plant is estimated at $30,000,
the plant being valued at $15,000 and
the building about the same. There
was some insurance, but the amount
Is not learned. Jt is known, however,
that It only -partially covers the loss.
The origin of the blaze is a mys
tery, so far as can be learned over
the telephone. The schooner Gerald
C. arrived at Iho cannery yesterday
from Astoria with a load of supplies
for the plant. 4 Included In the ship
ment was a quantity of sulphuric
acid. It Is supposed that this came
In contact with water In some man
ner, causing gases which exploded
and Ignited some Inflammable mate
rial In close proximity. Nothing In
the building was saved, as at that
early hour In the morning no one was
about, and by the time the blaze was
discovered Ingress to the building
was Impossible.
The cannery bus been leased for
the season by tne Eljnore Company,
of Astoria, who 'have large snipping
and canning Interests on the Colum
bia river. Preparations were being
I made to open the cannery at the be
ginning of the coming salmon sea
son on the Siuslaw. and the load of
sunnlles carried on the Gernld C. was
! the first brought in. Later a big
crew of Chinese laborers were coming
down from Astoria, and it-was plan-
nd to operate the cann-jry to its full
capacity.
The fire was a miectacular one and
attracted the entire population of the
little town of Acme as well us people
from Florence and other nearby
points, many of whom went to the
scene In boats, this being the only
means of transportation from one
point to another on the lower river.
Nothing could he done to save the
building from total destruction. The
citizens worked like Trojans to save
the lluid creamery building, a few
feet from the cannery, and they were
rewarded with Buccess. While tild
wnlls of the building were scorched
and at several times the roof caught
fire from sparks, the building es
caped practically without Injury.
One connery, thnt owne l by Wm,
Kyle at Florence, will h:ve to take
care of the salmon run on the Sius
law this seasi u as a result ol to
day's fire.
