ISUICIDES AND
ATTEMPTS TO
DROWN CHILD
Mrs. Tres.sa Markley, wife of Nor
man E, Markley, both former resi
dents of Eugene, committed suicide
at the fact of Walker street In Lake
Washington, at Seattle, yesterday
evening bv Jumping into the lake af
ter having thrown her seven-year-old
daughter in first.
Mrs Markley's mind has been af
fected for some time. The little girl
fell in shallow water and waded to
shore, where after an hour of wan
dering and climbing up the - steep
bank she was picked up by a kind
fa in 1 1 v and she told her tale.
The body of Mrs. Markley was re
covered soon after in the lake. Nor
man Markley, who was formerly an
attorney in Eugene, was wild with
grief. His wife was the daughter of
Mrs. M. J. Drew, of this city. At the
police station he said he had left Eu
gene lor the benefit of Ills w'tfe'E
health, but the change had done no
good.
There is little doubt but that the
suicide was altogether due to Insan
ity, for the girl said that her moth
er had that morning turned on the
gas to suffocate her child and herself,
but she (the little girl) hnd realized
what yvas wrong and turned It off.
