'"''C a,
the woman su.'frage grates of Colo
rado, Idaho, Utah and Wyoming."
His statement as an abstract proposi
tion Is irrefutable; but his Inference
is wrong. We who live In one cf
those woman suffruBe states are not
prepared to accept the Implied charge
that the women of the state are re
sponsible for the condition referred
to, says the lloi.se (Idaho) Statesman.
The men have run our polities. They
have named the tickets, written and
adopted platforms and devoted much
of their time during the campaign to
confusing the women .as to real is
sues, and. In some Instances, with
success.
The manner In which moral issues
have been received In woman suffrage
.states has been called attention to on
numerous occasions by those who
view the propositions from a distance
and In concrete form without having
knowledge of local conditions.. They
have not understood that moral Is
sues might posBibly have been advo
cated by riien of such a character that
the women of the state could not but
detect their transparent,, Insincerity.
The point Is one that our political
leaders should not lose Bight of. They
must couple their moral Issues with
moral advocates.' They must place
on their tickets men who -'harmonize
with their platform declarations, and
In whom the women of the state have
confidence. ' '
CHOI ROTATION NEEDED
Soils of the Willamette valley are
famous for their fertility Almost
anything can be grown with the prop
er attention, and because this Is the
case, farmers do not farm scientifi
cally and are fast robbing the land of
Its strength. . . v
Year after year, for twenty and
even thirty years, the same crop has
been grown on the same ground.
There has been no" attempt made at
rotation ot crops, no effort made to
keep the soil from exhaustion, and
season after season the earth grows
poorer, robbed of the elements that
make it a profit producer.
There are fields that have grown
corn for ten consecutive years. There
Is land that for still longer has never
failed to yield a good i-eturn in wheat.
There are thousands of acres that for
a score of years have produced one
crop a year, though the yield per aero
is lessening percept!!)!'.
In hoi'ticultute ,thls section excels.
Few regions can show such commer
cial orchards so scientifically cared
for. But in agriculture It is way in
the rear, and unskilled farming will
soon make all farming unprofitable
To conserve the strength ot the
soil, so that each year .It grows 11
more profitable crop than the y ;ar
before, 3 the lesson farmers must
learn and practice If they v.du1J keep
their farms in an up-to-date way, so
that they will yearly Increase in value.
A writer In the PhUadelphlat Pres?
contends that- gossip in the country
villages is not nearly so prevalent as
it is in the so-alled beit social cir
cles in the cities nor Is It so vicious.
The unkind word, the slanderous
word, the. character-assassinating
word, make up a great deal of the
small talk of people or small mirfds
and corrupt natures. .
Governor Wlllson has refused to
call an extra session of the Kentucky
legislature to pass temperance legis
lation, as demanded by the Southern
Methodist conference, on account of
the expense Involved. So the seduc
tive mint julep may still be had by
Colonel Watterson wlthuut leaving
the state to .get it.
The holder of the optimistic medal
should forward it to Lincoln, as Mr.
Bryan earned it when he said: "You
can't pick a state In which we don't
have a chance." But come to think
of it, Frank Hitchcock said about the
same thing, too.
