CONDITIONS IHPK FOIl
AIIVANCK IN llt'TTKH,
Portland, July S3. Conditions In
this stnto are ripe for an advance In
butter prleos, and but for the fact
that Kustorn quotations are now rela
tively low there would be an upward
movement here at this time. With
the pastures drying up more or less
generally the cream supply Is grow
ing smaller and butter production Is
naturally on tho decline. The state,
however, still produces a surplus ov
er current home needs, though that
surplus Is much lighter than a month
ago, and for this reason outside mar
kets arc, still necessary. A locul
creamery man said today:
At present prices we have out-
sldn markets for the surplus make.
nut ir we were to lift quotations
these nutlets would bo lost to us and
Knstern butter makers would get the
benefit. Hem tie Is now using large
quantities of Kiinleni butter, and If
ioiiil quiitiillotis were ntl.scd at this
time the chances are that In the
Sound territory Kustuin butler would
iimipleliily dUpluce tho Oregon pro
duct. Aa things look now the pros
pect hero is for a steady market at
current prices fur suiiui weeks."
In both the city and country
creamery markets trade Is activo and
there la no complaint of accumulation
anywhere. A dealer In country
creamery said today that the best
brnnits or country butter were even
a Utile scarce and that It was diffi
cult at times to fill orders. Second
grade butter Is fairly plentiful, but
this moves quite freely.
In cheese the situation locally li
much the same aa In butter. Produc
tion In Tillamook County has fallen
off seriously, with little or no weak
ening In the demand, hero or In the
North or South, and higher prices In
the near future are Inevitable. Twins
and triplets are generally selling al
14 cents In the wholesale markets,
but a dealer today reported occasion
al amall scales at 1 4 cents. Young
Americana are quoted nt li cents In
all probability there will be a Roller
al advance next week.

Ilrlef Notes of The Trade.
Ilest quality of dressed veal Is still
In good demand along the street but
poor meats of all kinds are not
wanted.
Supplies of local and California to
matoes are heavily Increased. A fea
ture of the present tomato move
ment is the greatly Increased sup
piles being offered by nearby sec
tions. This is expected to interfere
somewhat with the sales of such
large lota of eastern Oregon stuff.
New potatoes are down another
notch with somewhat larger sup
plies from local points.
( Watermelon trade is good at the
decline in price values yesterday.
Hop dealers report an absence of
business of any kind, either spot or
contract, at the moment.
While there la a firmer tone in
hides and wool no change Is today
shown in local values.
String beans are rather scarce
along the street and the market is
firmer.

CHINESE PHEASANTS
ARE PLENTIFUL
Though not 30 abundant as In some
past years, China pheasants will he
as plentiful this fall as during the
hunting season of 1907. Farmers In
Lane county report that in spite of
tho unfavorable hatching season this
spring there are apparently plenty of
the young game birds.
Last year at the end of the open
season there were more old birds left
than for many years. This was large
ly due to poor hunting weather.
