THOMAS FITCHAISI) IIItlXKS
MOItPIII.M'; HY .MISTAKE
Newport, Or., July -1. Thomas
Fltchard, proprietor of the Theato
rium, accMentally drank thirty
grains of morphine yesterday after
noon. He was experimenting with
his moving picture apparatus, mixing
morphine with ether to generate the
gas. He was using his drinking glass
to pour the morjihine and left fully
thirty grains of the drug iy the re
ceptacle. Later he went back for 'a
drink, and forgetting the morphine
in the glass, filled It with water and
drank the contents.
Noticing his mistake he rushed to
Fred Dawson's drug store, where Wil
liam Tohl advised him to drink cof
fee, and then saw Dr. Crowley, of
Monmouth, sitting on the porch of
the Albany House, and advised Mr.
Fltchard to consult him, which he
did. The doctor also suggested cof
fee, and while Fltchard was drinking
it he went to the drug store and pre
pared a stomach pump. Fitchard
was then brought to the drug store,
where he immediately swooned. With
the aid of Mr. TolvJ and the city mar
shal the doctor worked on the man
and he was sonn revived. He will
require close attention for at least
twelve hours.
Fitchard Is a son of C. L. Fltch
ard. the well-known hop buyer, who
visits Eugene frequently.
