PROMS NAME
GHAFIN AND
WATKINS TO LEAD
Columbus. O . July 17. For pres-Id'-t.t,
KuK'fin- V.' Chafln, of Chica
go. Kor vice president, Aaron S. Wat
kin, of Ada. Oiil'j.
Tin- above inker was nominated
today by the I'lohibltlon National
convention, both men being; chosen
unanimously. The full endorsement
of the convention, however,
waa not
Klven to Mr. Chafln until after three
ballot had been laaen.
On the flrat two ballots Mr. Chafln
did not show a uraat deal of atrenKth,
receiving but l5 out of I0K3 votes
on the flrat and 376 out of 1087 on
the second ballot. Ilia nomination
waa practically assured, however,
when the roll call bejran for the third
ballot. Ilia own state, which had
voted largely for Daniel H. Sheen,
of I'eorla, III., and the New York
delegation, followed by those of In
diana and Wisconsin, came over to
Mr. Chafln and on the third ballot he
received a total of 636 votes.
The strongest competitor of Mr.
Chafln was Hev. William B. Palmore,
of 8t. Louis, who received 274 votes
on the first ballot and 418 on the sec
ond ballot, and a comparatively small
vole after It waa evident that the
nomination of Mr. Chafln could not
be prevented.
Tangle Over Vice I'resldcnrjr
The convention tip to this time had
run smoothly and without the slight
est friction. It was decided to make
Mr. Palmore the vlco presidential
nominee and he was named by accla
mation. He declined to accept the
nomination, however, and persisted
In his attitude despite the strong urg
ing of his friends.
The convention, finding Itself con
fronted with the necessity of naming
another vice presidential candidate
and many of the delegates, being anx-
luos to catch the early night train for
their homes, became Involved in
decti parliamentary tangle. The
rules were several times suspended
and the suspensions Immediately re
voked. Finally It was docldod that
Professor Aaron A. Watklns, ot Ada,
Ohio, should be named by acclama
tion.
MOTIIKIl'S IIAKINti II.W.
I was doling In my armchair with a
book upon my knees.
While through tho open window
came sweet summer melodleB-
Thu sound of many song birds and
the humming of the bees:
And the breath of Junes red roses
drifted with the summer wind
(Now I love the scent of roses and
the wnndering breexo was kind
And he bare bis lovely burden till he
found my halt-closed blind.)
In the culinary rcglun underneath, I
thought 1 heard,
No wand then, Its clever goddess as
about her work she stirred:
And I caught the aound of singing
though I understood no word
Now t wonder It you've noticed as
you vo gone along life s way.
How some odsr will bring suddenly
to mind a certain day.
Or a scene, ot pain or pleasure, which
till then forgotten lay?
As I doted within my armchair came
my friend the summer breeze
Came and stirred the leaves of that
old book that lay upon my knee;
men he whispered, told me gently,
"Hero's something that will
please. .
1 was the smell of ginger rookies
from the regions down below!
And my thought went back to child
hood as an arrow from a bow
And 1 stood In mother's kitchen In
the years of long ago,
With her sleeves nbove her elbows
and her hulr all tidied back.
(She used to say a frowsy-headei
girl was always slack I
8ho would spend the half of Saturdn,
In baking up a slink.
Of cookies, bread and doughnuts
pies and puddings. Johnny cake
Oh 1 cannot rail to mind the half the
things she used to make.
nut I know 1 always liked to stay
annum ami watch her bake.
And I'm sure I must have bothered
her. for oft I've heard her wish
"I wouldn't get right under foot
then with a sudden sh !"
She drove me out (but afterwards
she let me lick the dish. I
iwas fun to watch her mix the
dough and use the rolling pin:
And when she had It all rolled out
(I always thought too thin.)
To see her cut out cookies with a
heart shaped cooky tin.
And how I tensed to have what's left
to make a cooky man!
And what a time 1 had to get him
safely In the pan.
Ami when 1 had him baked he looked
Just like a palm leaf f.m.
As still I dreamer! of baking days In
which I'd taken part,
I a suddenly awakened from un
dreaming with a start.
And there stood the kitchen goddess
with a fresh baked cooky heart.
Now I wonder If you've noticed as
you'e passed along life's wavs
How the smell of something bjklng
on the moment seined to raise
A long forgotten memory of our
niottier s cooking d.-yn

Bluebeard. ,
"Bluebeard" originated In France and
was called the "Romance of the Cheva

certain Giles de I.nnl, lord of Kalz.
He whs marshal of France In 1420 and
though a brave and fearless soldier
waa addicted to vice and violence, and
from this fact was charged with tho
wholesale murder of young women,
whose blood he used for the purpose of
diabolical Incantations. From these
circumstances the web of the story Is
spun.

Strange Uses For Churches.
