X ' cl me announcement of
his nomination:
"The presidency is the
highest offielal position in the
world and no one occupying
it can afford to have' his
views on public questions bl-
ased by personal ambition.
Recognizing his responsible
lty to God and his obligation
. to his countrymen, he should
endeavor to diseha )Ke his do- A
ties with a singleness of pur-
pose. Believing one can best
do this when not planning a
second term, I announce now,
as I have on former occasions,
that if elected I shall not be a
candidate for re-election.
"This nomination is plain-
ly from the people, and mv
obligation will be purely to
the people. I appreciate the
honor more because it came
not from one person, or from
a few persons, but from the
rank and gile. acting freely
and. 'Without' compulsion."
