Nola'in trmay wun the t It lu of llght
wflulit piiKllint of the world from
tin.- man who di'fnated him at Oold
f!nM, Nevada, alnioat two yeara ano.
IIk knorki-d out Joe GanB In the aev
enteeth round, after a flKht as dea
tirMte an any that had been seen
here In years. FUhtlnfC from the be
ginning to the end of every round,
moving ceaaeleaHly forward and
never giving ground. Nelson, with
hla bulldog tenacity and wonderful
stamina, slowly battered the veteran
colored pugilist Into submission. The
end was not sudden, and few who
watched the progress of the battle
and aaw Oans grow weaker and weak
er from round to rouad but had
made up their minds as to the result
long before the count was given that
made the Illinois lad champion for
the second tlmo.
Three times (iana was sent to the
floor lu the flniil round, each time
taking all the time allowed. A bl.iw
flom Nelson's left glove to the pit
of the stomach ended the fight, anil,
as Oans toppled over and rested on
hla knees, his face wore a most pain
ful expression. He tried In vain to
regain his feet, but failed and was
counted out.
(rmt Ovation to Victor.
Then 10,000 men and some score
of women who had gathered In the
open air arena on tho Snn Mateo
hills, cheered the man who had be
como champion after defeat, and
rushed In frenzied enthusiasm for
the ring. The speclul police were
bowled over and Nelson was swept
off his feet and hoisted on the shoul
ders of lis seconds to be curried
about the urenn and to Ills dressing
room, while the beaten, bleeding
(Inns was calmly escorted by his sec
onds from the scene of his defeat.
"The lii-iit muu won beyond doubt,'
was (Inns frnuk admission as ho left
ih'i ring. "It'B the old story of one
tight too many. Aifter tho third
round I begun In feel myself tiring.
Old age will tell. That Is all I have
to say."
Ik-nU-ll In Klglitli Itouiid.
Tim re was the usual dispute about
the count. It la said that, when (Inns
went down for the first and second
times In tho seventeenth round, he
was counted out, but so great was
the confusion no one could hear the
of.'lclnl timekeeper's count. Many
or Uuns' friends said tho count on
til ii final knockdown wua short and
that he was not properly out. It wua
apparent, however, that (Inns was a
defeated man after tho eighth round.
For tho first five rounds Cnns
landed at will on Nelson, terribly
punishing htm about the face. It did
not look that Nelson had one chance
In a hundred to win, but he. never
hesitated to come to closo quarters
with the champion and swung his
iii nis ceaselessly, seeking nn opening.
Finally, In the seventh round, (inns
begun lo weaken, and from that lime
the tide turned in Nelson's favor. In
the seventh he caught liana olf his
guard n ml lauded heavily on the
limly. There utter II wua Nelson's
fight. Huns used all his skill and
generalship to stall off the Halle's
niKlies. but fulled lo atop him.
In the twelfth round Hans went lo
the rinor for the count of nine on
three dllrereut occasions. Nelson pun
ched him severely about the body
iilnl face, but II wus the body blows
IHnl eventually brought the elm in
pliin to grief. In the fourteenth lians
showed u flash of his class. Although
apparently hopelessly beaten at this
stage ot the contest he rocked the
l-aiie time and again with his famous
short-arm wallops. Hut they had
mil the slightest effect and. when
liana went to his corner, he seemed
to reullie that he was a beaten man
und so Informed his seconds
The closing scenes of the fight oc
curred after Nelson had liainmereil
his muu to tlie ropes, dans, who for
a tew rounds had delayed the luevlt-

He arose wearily as the count went

'l!d Illat there
when Gana looked a winner. Ia the
first six rounds he found the riirht
of way to Nelson's chin whenever he
wanted to and while many of the
blows were merely anappy ones there
were times when Can put all the
strength at his command liehiiid his
uppercuts. Whenever he did so, the
lie.st he accompllsh'-d was to tilt tlie
liune'a head or send the iJane reeling
a pace of go.
The battle light was always glint
ing in Neison'a eyes and he was al
ways boring In and flinging his arms
at ills dusgy opponent. The most
discouraging thing lo the Gans m-:U
around the ring was the way Nelson
assimilated Gans' fierclest blowB and
kept piling In for more.
Hut Horeil In Always.
It can safely be said that Nelson
never fought more determinedly dur
ing the whole of hla career. He was
after the champion from bell to bell,
and whatever dull moments there
were In the close fighting were due
to Cans' holding tactics.
Xclson W'ina liig Money.
Nelson, when seen in his dressing
room after the fight, presented a bat
tered appearance, hut waa apparent
ly as strong as when the fight com
menced. He said :
"I knew I could lick him. I took
all the bets I could get and cleaned
up a big sum. I have won the light
weight championship and have all
the money 1 want. I don't care If
I never see a boxing glove again.
I may or may not, however, fight
again."
Heteree Jack Welsh had this to
say after the fight:
Nelson won a clear-cut victory.
I do not, however, think that the (Jans
of today was the Joe Gans of old. He
seemed to have lost some of his clev
erness and to my eye his blows did
not seem to have the same vim be
hind them. Nelson was too strong.
and It was a case of youth having Its
fling."
The attendance at today's battle
was tho greatest, with two exceptions,
that ever attended a prize-fight In
California. The receipts approxi
mated $40,001).
Ti-x Itli kanl's HctH.
Tex Rlckard, of Goldfleld, bet
$5000 even that Gans would win In
20 rounds; ho also wagered $5000
to $2500 that Gans would win on
results, and $2000 even that Gans
would win In lo rounds.
Tho preliminary fight between
Camp Nelson and Red Cornell was
concluded at 2:10 p. m. Nolson was
given the decision. It was a very
bloody contest and the vast crowd
tlmo and again yelled to the referee
to stop It. Nelson waa given the de
cision at tho end of the eighth round.
Just as tho sheriff Jumped Into the
ring to stop the contest.

I.os Angeles, July 4. Keferee Jim
Jeffries this morning declared the
fight between Packey McFarland o(
Chicago and Freddie Welsh, the
English lightweight, a draw at the
end of 25 rounds of clever boxing.
The decision wus met with a storm
of dlsapprnval, a majority of the
spectators being of the opinion thai
the stockyards scrapper hud clearly
won.
McFarland was fur tho stronger
when the fight ended and In tho final
round he knocked Welsh down with
a clean right to the Jaw and had his
man In distress. The little Britisher
came back and fought gamely, but
It required all his rleverness to stall
off a knockout in the final seconds
of tho contest, though he was fight
ing savagely at the hell.
