Alexis went off to a barracks to be
turned Into u soldier. His command
ing officer had no need to lecture blru
as to the importance of obedience, for
Alexis' determination to make a mil
itary machine of himself only grew
stronger with his nbseuce from home.
When he bad been drilled till lie could
march by the flank or w heel or double
quick as If worked by springs. Instead
of being sent to the front to be shot he
w as sent with bis regiment to do guard
duty at the riar'i palace.
One day Alexis was stationed Inside
the palace with a lieat past a door
which he was told to guard.
"Iu there," said his captain, "is his
majesty the emperor. Do iot permit
any one to enter."
"Not any one?"
"That is the order. See that it is
obeyed."
The officer bad scarcely left when
rrlncc Menschlkoff, the ciar's favorite
minister, came up and made straight
for the door of the czar's apartment.
"ou can't go In there!" shouted
Alexis, placing himself In the minis
ter's way.
"Yon fool! I am allowed free access
to his majesty at all times."
"That makes no difference to nic
since 1 have been instructed to let no
one pass."
"You impudent bound!" exclaimed
Menschikoff "III teach you rcsioot
for your betters." And. raising bis
cane, he brought It dow-n on tbo sol
dier's shoulders.
Thwack, thwack, thwack, thwack!
Suddenly the door opened, ami there
stood the czar. Ills minister was be-
latioring his guard, who received the
blows bolt upright with his musket
at "present."
"What's this?" asked the czar.
"This fellow denies me admittance
to your majesty's presence," said Men
schlkoff. The czar looked at the soldier, who
did not open his mouth, still standing
with his musket at "present.'
'".Yell, come In." snld the czar. Men
schlkoff entered, and the two were en
gaged for an hour upon business of
state. When the minister made his
exit Alexis had been relieved and ail
other man put In his place.
That evening shortly before the
lights were put out at the barracks
Alexis received a summons to tho
palace. He felt sure that the minister
had received from the cznr permission
to Inflict upon him some terrible pun
ishment. Indeed, he expected to be
reprimanded, then taken out and shot.
"It doesn't matter," he snld. "They
have Insisted on making a soldier of
me against my will, and I am n sol
dier. What Is a soldier for but to die?"
When he reached tile palace ho was
taken Into a large room, at one end of
which he saw Menschlkoff nnd the
tzar talking together. Peter held in
his hand a cane, which be gave to
Alexis when he came up and, pointing
to the minister, said:
"This man struck you this mornfng;
return the blow with my stick."
Menschlkoff was astonished. "Does
vour majesty mean that? Surely you
don't Intend that a private soldier shall
strike your minister?"
"That would not be right. I admit,"
said Peter. "1 therefore make him a
captain."
"Hut I am an olllcer In your majes
ty's household."
"I make him a colonel of my life
guards nnd an offl.-er of my household."
"Hut 1 am a general."
"And so Is he. 1 appoint bim to that
rank. You see I will not permit you
to Ik- struck by one of Inferior rank."
That ended Menschlkoff's protest, for
there was nothing more to say. The
czar motioned Alexis to begin, and the
newly made general laid on the stick
till the czar, who was greatly amused.
sli;naltl 111... to deslsL Then Alexis
was tllsiulswtl. and the officer who had
brought bin. was Instructed to sec that
he was lodged for the nifbt at the !
