The following editorial from a Sa
lem paper is reprinted In the Albany
Herald: 1
What the press of the state should
do is to help Eugene make a real uni
versity out of the school at Eugene
Oregon should have as good a uni
versity as other Western states
Eugene has been treated verv fair
ly by the press of the state and th-re
is now plenty of good constructive
work to do In the interest of higher
education.
The best thought of the best men
tn the stflta alinnlrl ),,. .II- .
putting the state University In the
front rank.
This sentiment is good enough, but
Its expression comes late after the
battle has been fought and won
largely by the splendid work of the
newspapers outside of Marion and
Linn counties. These pupcrs did noth
ing for the University or threw their
influence into the scale against the
Institution. Even now their animos
ity is apparent in the reiterated ref
erence to Eugene, as ft tile l uiver
eity were a local institution, a narrow
new that was largely responsible fin
ing heavy vote cast against the appro
priation in the lower valley counties
now would the Salem papers rega'rl
the constant reference to peniten
tiary, asylum or reform school as the
"Salem penitentiary," the "Salem
asylum" etc., or how would they like
to have those institutions treated. In
the matter of appropriations by the
legislature and the people, as purely
local institutions in which the people
at large had no common inton-i?
That is what these same paper.-: are
nratlniialiy doing with reference to
the S at a University what titey are

Hoes, and if any citizen of Eu.u-ne
Wtetl for the appropriation wh.i
would not have voted for it had the
the school been located at Albany or
Salem, who was actuated bv purely

gene people were especially active in
the campaign because they were most
familiar with the work and the worth

The Dalles. Or., June 10 (To the
E litor. ) I see that Pomona Grange,
of Linn county. Is agitating the (i,cs-'

the Oregon Agricultural College and
the University of Oregon. In order
that studies may not be duplicated

institution should stay lu Its sneeinl
limits. Why should an agricultural
school teach Latin, Gerninn, electri

a farmer make of stiih stuff, and as
the agricultural college s for the
fanner, let It te.-nh only such things
as the fanner actually needs, and
surely no one will contend t,at the
fanner n i ds Latin, ec inomlcs, Ger
