BOND PART OF
COUNTY FOR SIUSUW
HARBOR WORK
CITIZENS OF LANK COUNT V
COAST TIItEI OF WAITING FQU
CO V KKXM ENT TO IMPROVE
IlAB AND NEW FLAX BEING
DISCUSSED BY FlfOMINENT CITIZENS
The citizens of the Sluslaw valley
are tired of waiting for the govern
ment to Improve the bar at the mouth
of the river, so vessels can pass In or
out without delay, and a plan Is be
ing discussed to raise funds for the
undertaking In another way. It Is
proposed to bond that part of Lane
county lynlg west of the Coast range
of mountain for, say twenty or forty
yearn, and use the money thus raised
In building jetties at the mouth of
the river. It Is thought by the pro
moters that $100,000 can he rained
In this way, and with tbls sum consid
erable of a start can he made to
ward constructing the Jetty. It is
hoped by the time this sum Is ex
pended that the national government
will be ready to take up the work and
push It to completion. To meet the
interest on the bonds each year It Is
nroposed to collect a toll of perhaps
25 cents a thousand feet on the lum
ber and a proportionate sum on all
other articles exported from this
place. Later on a sinking fund can
lie raised In" the snme way to pay off
the bonds when they become due. In
this way the expense of building the
letty would be borne by the Indus
tries that are directly benefitted by
the work. Some of the leading busi
ness men of the Sluslaw are ngltntlng
the question, and most of the others
have declared themselves In favor of
the measure. The legal aspects have
not been entirely Investigated, but it
Is thought a bill can be passed by
the legislature permitting t'he'nues
tlon to be left to a vote of the peo
ple of the dlsfrlct. This phase of the
question will be looked Into before
long and we shall probably have
something further to say about the
matter later on. Florence West.

Some time Saturday night a 'rob
ber or robbers entered Campbell &
Fellman's housefurnlshlng store and
the cash till was opened, but two
cents was all the money that it con
tained. They took that, and as far
as can be learned nothing else was
molested. Entrance to the store was
effected by way of the Olive street

broken and the miscreants, sliding
up tho outre door reached through
the broken glass on the inner door
and turned the lock. They pried the

poorly rewarded for their pains.
