VISIT CATHOLIC SCHOOL
I.AIKiK FLAG l'KKSKNTKI) AT A
MKETING HKM WEDNESDAY
AFTKKN'OOX ADDRESSES DELIVERED
The children of the Catholic school
held a patriotic entertainment on
Wednesday afternoon in their hall
in the rear of the school. Those
present were Rev. J. M. O'Farrell,
Commander Baker, Colonel Mercer.
J. II. Gates, E. F. Chapman and
Mr. Offutt, the ladles of th Relief
Corps and ths parents of the children.
The program was carried out very
successfully and at its close Colonel
Mercer addressed the pupils. He
said that it gave 'him great pleasure
to address the children of the Cath
olic school once more, and to be able
to present to them a flag from the
niemhers of the Grand Army and the
Relief Corps. His intention was to
apeak on what the flag stood for, and
to explain to the children what it
meant, but he had seen by the beau
tiful and patriotic program which
they had rendered that such an ex
planation was not necessary. The
colonel wished every success to the
school and 'hoped its pupils would
always be true and loyal subjects of
the Stars and Stripes.
The next speaker was Rev. J. M.
O'Farrell, who thanked the colonel
and the members of the Grand Army

FOR NEXT SHERIFF
OF LANE COUNTY
The next sheriff of this county
will probably handle not less than
seven hundred thousand dollars, or
nearty three-quarters of a million dol
lars of the people's money during
his term of office. He should there
fore be a man of the strictest Integ
rity and the utmost honesty. His
character, like that of Caesar's wife,
snould be above suspicion. Have
the voters of Lane county stopped to
consider this matter seriously? Har
ry Bown, candidate for sheriff on
the Democratic ticket, has a racord
for faithfulness to duty that entitles
him to the confidence of the, voters.
The question of whether the candi
date is a Democrat or Republican
should not be considered in the mat
ter of county affices, but the char
acter of the man is what should be
looked at. He should be a man of
clear brain and clear conscience. It
is the duty of eVery voter to safe
guard the public funds with the
same care and caution that he bes
stows upon his individual proper
ty. The people must have a Bherltf
that merits their absolute confidence
They will and should be satisfied
with nothing less than this. How
can the people judge a candidate ex
cept by his character and by the
record he has made? Harry Bown
Is receiving the support of both par
ties because he Is a man of charac

support of any honest, conscientious
