der. "When the Klks first organ
ized themselves many years ago, the
ceremonies at each session were very
solemn and frequently lnsted until
daylight. This agitated t'ho wives of
the Elks, and they banded together
to suppress the order. A compromise
was finally effected by which every
Elk pledged himself not to stay at
lodge later than 11 o'clock. The
Elks have always kept this pledge
faithfully, and every good Elk con
