"A Bird in the Hand

Is a well known adage, and a
correct one, too. In sub

There's absolutely no ex

many people go to the cities

CANDIDATE WHO
FIGHTS HIMSELF
Newport, Ore.OMay 27. W. F.
Keady of Waldport, Lincoln county,
16 miles south of Newport, who la
running on the Democratic ticket as
candidate for county commissioner,
occupies proably one of the strang
est situations in the political hlBtory
of Oregon. Keady is a registered
Republican who was defeated at the
primaries for his party's nomination,
but without any knowledge of his
own, his name was written In on the
Democratic ticket and to the sur
prise of everybody It was found that
he had received the Democratic
nomination. He accepted this, but
nevertheless Is acting as private sec
retary to Frank Bulker of Waldport,
chairman qf the Republican county
central committee, and In that capac
ity ia compelled to write and send out
to the voters of the county letters
urging them to vote the straight
Republican ticket and defeat him
self. Keady explains his peculiar posi
tion by saying that on account of the
fact that primary day was wet and
rainy, only 430 of the registered
Republicans of the county came out
and cast their votes, and he refuses
to accept the result, as expressing
the will of the party. He still classes
himself as a Republican, though on
the Democratic ticket and says that
fter the election he will return to
the fold. Meantime he is touring
the county In an effort to offset the
ffect of the letters against himself
which as Bunker's secretary he is
obliged to send out. He expresses
himself as confident of being elected.
REV. C. A. WOOLY
ANSWERS MR. WILSON.
Editor Eugene , Guard: In your
Issue May 26, 1 notice some state
ments and arguments attributed to
Rev. Clarence True Wilson against
Woman Suffrage. By your permis
sion, I wish to say a few words In
reply, through the Guard. In the
first place I do not think it is true
that only a very small minority of
Oregon's good women wish the bal
lot. I am pretty well acquainted In
Western Oregon, and I do not think
nazard anything when I say that
respectable majority of them do
wish the ballot. Those aueens of
our homes would love to become
full fledged citizens. Mr. Wilson's
statement to the effect that there
are not four other states In the un-
on as corrupt politically as Col
orado, Idaho, Wyoming and Utah,
Is not true, barring the last named
stale, where the hierarchy and
polygamy of the Mormon church has
blighted and 'hindered every effort
at moral reform, from the 1st set
tlements of the territory and state,
It is not justified by either facts or
figures. And to make such a state
ment without an effort to prove .It
save the one thing that he knew In
stances In which women had barter
ed their virtue for office, Is to beg
the1 question most plteously. Does
not he. and everybody else know
that degraded women sell their vir
tu In every Btate In the Union for
clerkships, money, fine clothOB and
trinkets; why then does he seek to
make the Impression that tha ballot
In women's hands tends to degrade
her, by citing such Instances to prove
It. Colorado, Idaho and Wyoming
will compare very favorably with
such states as Montana, Nevada and
others. In point of fact, 'he need not
go away from the Pacific states to
find drunkenness, gambling, prize
fighting, prostitution and every form
of bosslsm, and political corruption
as rampant as In Colorado. Idaho
and Wyoming.
nosliles It Is not true that eaual
suffrage has been tried In all of
those stntoB that he mentions for
thirty years, as his statement clearly
Implies. Reduced to final analysis
his loose statements and arguments
prove, if they prove anything, that
to vote, 'hold office or tnke an active
part in politics tonds to debase a
woman. Now if thiB be true. It is
because there is a debasing Influence
In voting and holding office and
therefore every time a man or wom
an casts a ballot or aspires to office,
lie or she Is mnde worse. If such
were the facts our system of govern
ment would be a huge mistake, and
we had better resolve It into an ab
solute monarchy, and the quicker the
bettor. But who believes such stuff?
There are good and true men and
women who do not think It beat for
women to vote, and I do not impugn
the motive of Mr Wilson but 'his loose
statements appear to me wholly un
justifiable and his logic ridiculous.

FORMER RESIDENT
GIVES WOOD ADVICE
TO EUGENE PEOPLE
Kennewlck, Wash., May 25, 1908.
Editor Guard: It has been my In
tention for some time to write you
a personal letter, and your circular
letter of recent date affords me an
opportunity to express my apprecia
tion of same and to make a few re
marks about my old home town.
Probably I take more notice of
Eugene from the fact that ten years
of my boyhood were spent In that
vlclnltv than I otherwise would.
However, after surveying the condi
tions and possibilities of other places
along the Pacific coast which It has
been my good fortune to observe and
comparing them with those of Eu-
sjene I can say with candor that 1 be
lieve Eugene has a brilliant future.
The question of greatest impor
tance to the citizens of Eugene and
vicinity Is without doubt the build
ing up of the city and surrounding
country, and it appears that you are
wide awake tn regard to the means
for forging ahead. I believe that the
people of Eugene realize that It is
better to build steadily and artisti
cally than to boom. The greatest ad
vertisement to any city or commu
nity Is artistic and attractive homes,
good highways and public places.
Every one who builds should endeav
or to do so attractively. A four-room
'house can be deslgned to be attrac
tive as easily as a mansion may be.
This Is too Infrequently considered
when building cheap houses, and as
a consequence most cheap dwellings
present the anpearance of shacks,
public parks add wonderfully to the
cheerfulness and life of any city.
I might say more, but did not In
tend to deliver a lecture. However,
I will say in conclusion that I ad
mire the spirit of Eugene, working
systematically to make a greater and
better city. Such boosting done with
forethought and founded upon truth
will make Eugene 'a beautiful and
prosperous city.
Wishing The Guard every success
and your citizens continued prosper
ity, I remain.
Yours very truly.
