AN
OF DISEASE MRU SUFFERING
Ko truth is more forcibly manifesuJ il physical life than the old saying
like begets like;" for just as the offspring of healthy ancestry are blessed
with pure, rich blood, insuring health and strength, so the children of blood
tainted parentage inherit a polluted circulation to burden their existence
with disease and suffering. Swollen glands aliout the neck, brittle bones,
weak eyes, pale, waxy complexions, running sores and ulcers and general
poor health, are the usunl ways in which Scrofula is manifested. In some
cases the blood is so filled with the scrofulous germs and tubercular niattei
that from birth life is made miserable with suffering. Others who inherit
the disease succeed in holding the trouble in check during young, vigorous
life, but when the system has begun to weaken and lose its natural vitality,
and especially after a spell of sickness, the ravages of the disease will com
mence, and in a great many cases terrainatein Consumption. S. S. S. is the
very best treatment for Scrofula. It runoate9 the entire circulation and

purifiers, and it not only goes to the very
bottom of the trouble and removes the canst
and cures the disease, but it supplies the
weak, anaemic blood with tlie healtniui

THE EYE AXi) ITS CARE
(By Dr. Franc Lucille Hard, N'ew
Chrisman Block.)
In our first article upon the eye
and its care a brief description of the
anatomy of the eyeball will be com
menced. '
As all know, the eyeballs are sit
uated In the front of the head In two
hollow cavities called the orbits.
The shape of these cavities is pyra
midal with the apeces directed in
ward. The walls of the orbits are
of bone lined with various tissues
and much fat, which forms a soft
bed for the eye-ball to rest in.
In front, the eye Is protected by
the eyebrows, eyelids, and eyelashes.
The eyebrows help keep the dust1
and dirt from toe eye and also regu-!
late, to a small extent, the amount
of light which enters the eye. The
eyelids are the shields of the eye,

and play a very Important part In
protecting the eyeball. Their action
being Involuntary as well ns volun-
tary, they close upon the slightest
danger approaching the eye. And In:
the act of winking, the gland3
which line their Inner surface are !
made to secret a solution which j
keeps the front of the eye moist and
well lubricated. But perhaps the :
greatest use of the eyelids is to
keep the light from the eyes when
at rest, for if one was never able to j
close the eyes and shut out all1
light and motion, occasionally,:
think what a calamity It would be.!
The eyelashes, which are rows of:
short curved hairs situated at the1
free margin of each eyelid, also holp i
in keeping dust from entering the I
eye. Some times these tiny hairs!
grow in the wrong direction and ;
cause much trouble by scratching!
and irritating the eyeball. This can !
generally be helped by carefully re
moving the offending lashes. I
The above are the protectors of1
the eye-ball. The rotators ormus-j
cles of the eye will next be considered.
There are six muscles attached to
each eyeball. The Internal Rectus
muscle Is situated on the nasal side
of the eyeball pulling It toward the
nose. The External Rectus muscle
which pulls the eye toward the
temple and Is fastened to the tem
plar side of the eyeball. The Super
ior iiecius muscle, Bituated on top
of the eyeball pulls it upward and'
the Inferior Rectus muscle pulling i'
downward. Is located on the under f
side of the eye. There nre two oth-!
cr muscles called the oblique mus-j
cles named from their action In pul
ling the eyes obliquely up and down.;
Of the muscles of the eye the In-!
ternal Rectus Is the strongest, thei
Kxternal Rectus Is the longest, and
the Inferior Rectus Is the shortest.
