The construction of electric lines

Dealers are uncertain
as to the future. Reports fr.mQCast
ern correspondents to local dealers are
to the effect that there is a decrease
in consumption of manufactured
woolens, and that manufacturers are
carrying light stocks of raw material,
waiting to see what is ahead. Re
ports also say that if a rally In the
market should come, it might be with
an activity as marked as Is the pres
ent dullness. Shearing Is already
progress, but there are no sales. It s
said that growers are In a position
to do so, and that they are likely to
,hold their stocks if prices d. not im

The University of Orea.-n Is not a

nn education as full and thorough as
money will buy for any rich man's
son or daughter. Hundreds of those
who have attended the institution in
the past will testify to the truth of
'this statement, and the several let

Guard will tend to correct the false
Impression on this point created by
unscrupulous enemies of higher edu

and of the University in particular.
The beef trust is still booming the
price of its product, yet if you go to
the large stock-growing localities of
the country you will find that the
price of cattle on foot is as low as
ever. If the law-making body of the
United States wants to do something
really worth while for the benefit of
the people It will get busy In doing
things to the trust controlling the
food products of the country. The
people are entitled to relief and It
must be given them soon, or else it
will be too late.
That's a curious reason Judge
Gray gives for turning down nn offer
of $200,000 a year to become presi

that no man should receive a larger
salary than Is paid the president of
the United States. How about that
half million dollar salary paid Ilam-

Many planks, beautifully polished
by would-be platform makers, will be
found in the scrap heap after the
work of the platform committees of
the national conventions has been
completed, with the "misfit" brand

They are pawing up the soil.
They are letting go of business
And neglecting of their toil;
They're forgetting their religion
In the house and on the street.
And likewise too their politics
They're dotty on the fleet
They are loading up tlie jakles
With a cargo of pink teas.
They are cruwdlng them with wel

They've taken off the lid of things j
And made the whole coast freo
For every tarry visitor .
Who came to them by sea.
They have set the valiant officers
On pinacles of fame, I
They've filled their veins with native

Which gets there .lust the sani
They have given them the climatu
In Its glory and its bloom, j
With an affidavit showing t
It will drive away all gloom.
They swim out In the briny deep
Hy either day or night
To meet the coining warships
Ilefore they get In sight. '
They flock around the anchored;

Like fish around the halt,
And shout their joy along the coast

Oh. sny. I
