PAVING PLANT'S
NARROW ESCAPE
FROM FIRE
MLXIXO TANK ItOILS OVF.lt AXI
KKTS FIIIK to WOODWORK
XKAItLV A.V ACCIDENT TO THE
CHEMICAL EXOI.VK AXI HOSE
WAGON'
This morning at 4:40 o'clock an
alarm of fire wan turned In from the
Warren Construction Company's pav
ing plant on Lincoln street. The fire
men made a quick response and
found the plant almost enveloped In
flames. A line of hose waa laid and
soon a stream of water was playing
on the blaze, quickly extinguishing
It.
For some reason the paving mate
rial In one of the mixing tanks boiled
over and the hot material upon strik
ing the ground burst Into flames. A
woman residing near the plnnt threw
a bucket of water on the blaze, but
that made It burn fill the more, and
the flames shot up and soon Ignited
the woodwork. It was then that the
alarm was turned In. Tho damage
was slight and there was no delay In
Lh operation of the plant.
Manager Shrewry this morning
slated that several of the company's
plants have burned down in just such
a milliner during tho past few years.
Ono In Portland burned last year,
and only a few days ago another in
Newark, X. .1., was destroyed. When
ever water Is udmittcd to the tanks
containing the red hot paving mate
rial, no matter lr It Is only a very
small quantity, there Is not much
hnpo of saving the plant, as the
flames In most instances soon be
come beyond control. At the fire
this morning the water was played on
tho flames on the ground and on the
woodwork. , .
Nearly nn Accident
In running to .the fire with the
chemical engino nnd hose wagon Dri
ver Caylor ennio near having a bad
accident. As he was rounding the
turn nt the Hotel Gross a man stod
in the middle of the street and
refused to get out of the way
of- tho team. The driver , was
compelled to turn to go
around him, and In doing so the team
ran onto the sidewalk between the
hotel porch and the mable tree there,
damaging the cement curbing and
the porch to some extent, but not
hurting the engine. Tho team was
bucked off and tho run to the fire re
sumed with tho loss of only a few
seconds of . time. Rrlver Caylor
thinks the man who stood In the way
was drunk.

FAMOUS SHIP
HAS BEEN FOUND
IN FAR NORTH
Victoria. April 27. Latest reports
Jrom the Far North, received by way
or me ponce post to Dawson, con
firm the word brought by Captain
Jarvis, of the It. N. W. M. P., that
the long forgotten exploration ship,
Investigator, has freed herself from
the Ice and Is now being towed by
one of the steam whaling fleet in
the direction of Brhrlng Straits,
whence It Is hoped to bring her down
to San Francisco and place her on
exhibition as one of the greatest of
marine curiosities. Afterward the
salvors of the historic ship propose
to tour her, believing that if prop
erly advertised she will prove exceed
ingly valuable for show purposes.
It Is highly Improbable that there
ever has been a story to parallel that
of this old British warship now beat
ing her forgotten path back to civil
ization for the first time since she
sailed through Behrlng Straits into
the unknown Polar seas and icy
shadows more than fH years ago.
Since September 21, 1851. II. M. S.
Investigator has been frozen, in1 in
Mercy bay, narlng Island, in the in
ternilnate lacework of land and sea
lo the north of British North Amer
ica. It was as enmntHiider of this
Tamous old ship that Sir Robert Le
Mesitrier MeCiure made his memora
ble voyage and discovered the North
west Passage In IS49 England
turned loose her navy to try once
more for the trail through the frozen
north that had been up to thnt time
merely a superstition bordering upon
certainly.
The Investigator was then an old
wooden corvette, fitted with a steam
engine nnd carrying a row of long
guns behind her whlte-palnted port
holes. Nevertheless she was In 1S49
selected to perform the hazardous
feat of battling with the ice floes
nnd bergs of the unknown Xcth,
and to form one of Captain Bel
cher's squadron In scach of the
Northwest Passng?. The last that
the other ships of the squadron saw
of the Investigator was on August
6, 1 S r. f) . when she was seen running
northeast, rgundlng Point Barrow,
In what was then Russian America,
or Alaska.
