CATHOLICS CELEBRATE
WITH LICENSES
(Continued from Page 1.)
shares with St. Paul the glorious tl-i
tie of apostle of the nations. (
We are assembled here this morn-!
lug to celebrate with Joyful uraise j
and thanksgiving the hundredth an
niversary of the establishment of the)
diocese of New York. I
A retrospect of the principal per
sonages who figured In the history !
of this see during the past century j
would be manifestly Incomplete if no,
mention were made of John Carroll, I
the first archbishop of Baltimore, the ;
Metropolitan, in his day, or the Bish
op of New York, and the Patriarch of
the American church.
John Carroll was appointed the
first bishop of Baltimore by Pius
VII, In an apostolic brief dated No
vember, 1789. The see of Baltimore
then finbra -red the whole United

Knglnnil, the e.i,4iut scut of Thomas
j Weld, ICsq. Mr. Wdd had the honor
: f entertaining, iimi-j than once,
1 King (ieore III, of Knghuiil, and the
(.friendship of the sovereign secured
j fur his. hint religious concessions
' which were denied Id the otli-r Cath
i till" gentry mid nobility III those days
, of persecution;
I The consecrating prelate was Dr.
i WalmcKley, vicar aposiollc jf the
j London district. This bishop wiis not
only 11 learned cliuriliniiiii, hut also
a distinguish'. d scientist. When Kng
Innd had determined iu ISTil) to adopt
I '.in (Ire gorliui calendar, Dr. W'alines
ly was selected with other scientific,
men t: arrange the calendar, and
adopt It to the British realm.
The sermon, on that occasion, was
prinehe l by Itev. Charles IMowden,
an Intimate friend of Dr. Carroll, and
a member of the Society of Jesus.
Kalher I'lowdon then uttered a pre
diction Unit has limply been fulfilled.
He said that tile day would come
when the daughter would surpass the
mot her, when I ho church In America
would outgrow In iiumherB ami Influ
ence the Church of 10 n gland. 1
His words have been abundantly
verified, for today the Catholic
church ln the United States vastly.
excclB the Church of Kngland In the,
niliu, lcr of the hierarchy, her clergy
and laity, -and in the splendor of her
Institutions of religion, charity und
education.'
I regard 'the selection of Bishop
Carroll as a most providential event
for the welfare of the American
church. Kor, If a prelate of narrow
views, a man put of sympathy and
hnrmony with the genius of the new
ltopubllc had been chosen, the pro-
gross of the Catholic religion would
have been 'seriously Impeded.
Te cardinal then followed the his
tory of the church in America down
to the present time, dwelling upon
the most important epochs and in
cidents in the order of thetr occur
rence. I
But of all the nations that have;
contributed to the upbuilding of the;
church pi Christ In (he city of New
York, you will all avow with gratl- j
tude, whatever may be your anccslry. !
that the post of honor must betas-!
signed to the children of the ever j
faithful Ireland. They have bornej
ftie brunt of the battle. Whatever j
may have been the causes that led j
to the expatriation of so many of 1
Ireland s sons and daughters from j
their native soil, an over-ruling Prov-j
Idence has made their exile subser
vient to higher and holler purposes.
I can safely say that there are but
few cities or towns In the United
States where the Catholic religion
has not been proclaimed by priests
and sustained by laymen or Irlso j
birth or descent.
, Daniel Webster, in a speech dell v.;
ered in the United Slates senate, thus I
speaks or the vast expanse of the j
British empire:
"She has dotted over the surface,
of the globe with her possessions and!
military posts, whose morning driim-j
beat, following the sun, and keeping!
company with the hours, encircles j
the earth with one unbroken strain
of the martin airs of Knghintl." t
And may we not affirm, with equal i
truth, that whenver England has j
enlarged 'her boundaries the Irish ;
missionary' has extended the klng-t
dom of Christ, wh' rever she has pro
claimed her lawi. be has preached j
the gospel; whei r ver Kngland has j
built a f:;rt or a '-ustom house, the j
-missionary has erected a house of 1
prayer, e';d vnei-evc-r l-Jnglanu has
planted the banner of St. (Jeorge, the
Irish missionary has raised the cross;
the symbol of salvation.
When I contemplate this army of
sturdy Immigrants leaving their na
tive shores of lCurope anil advancing
toward your beautiful harbor, when
I behold them assimilated with the
native population, and become "bone;
of our bone nnd flesh of our flesh.
when I see them contributing to the
material wealth and prosperity of
the country, und above all, when I
observe theni enriching our nation
with the blessings of the Christlau
faith, and uniting with us In build
ing up the walls of Jerusalem, when
I survey this scene, the glorious vlB-j
Ion of the Prophet Isaiah looms up :
before me: "Arise, be enlightened 61
.Jerusalem, for thy light is come, ;
and the glory or the Lord is risen i
upon thee. The Gentiles shall walk
In thy light nnd kings In the bright
ness or thy rising. Lift up thine eyes
round about and see; all these are,
gathered together; they are como un
to thee; thy sons shall come from
afar, and thy daughters shall rise up
at thy side, Then slutlt.tho usee and -abound,
and thy heart shall wonder
and be enlarged when the. multitude
or the sea shall be converted to thee,
the strength or the Gentiles snail
como upto thee."
A word, In conclusion, to you, my
brethren, who are the heirs or the
rnlth or your fathers. It is your sa
cred mission to see to it that the glo
rious prophecy of Isaiah will be am
ply fulfilled, nnd that the twentieth
century will emulate the century
Just closed by tho growth nnd expau-'
Ion of the "church of Christ. This
result vou will accomplish by co-op
erating with your bishops and clergy!
In promoting every good worn un
dertaken in the cause of religion and
hlUIIHTlitV
When the bishop, his clergy and 1
people are united, there Is no such
word as fail. They are sure to suc
ceed. They for ma triple chord that
cannot be broken. They are engaged
in a triple alliance more formidable
and enduring than the alliance of
kings and -emperors; for yours Is an
alliance, not of flush and blood, but a
compact cemented by faith, hope and
charity.
Take an actnve, personal, loyal In
terest In all that concerns the tem
poral and spiritual welfare or your
beloved country. No man should be
a drone in the social beehive. No
one should be an Indiflerent specta
tor of the Bocial, economic and politi
cal events occurring around him. As
you all enjoy the protection of a
strong and enlightened government,
so should each man strive to have
a share in sustaining the burden of
the commonwealth.
Above oil, take an abiding and vi
tal interest In all that affects the
welfare of your holy religion. Let
the words of the royal Psalmist be
your inspiring watchword: "If I
forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my
right hand be forgotten; let my ton
gue cleave to the roof of my mouth,
if I do not remember thee; If I do
iiLt make Jerusalem the beginning of
my joy."
