SURVEY FOR BAR
AT SIUSLAW'S MOUTH
At the regular meeting of the Sius
law Improvement Club last Monday
evening, letters from Representatives
llawley and Ellis were read and each
expressed a willingness to do all In
his power to obtain a new survey of
the bar. It was supposed that n part
of the last, appropriation for the Im
provement of the bar was still to
our credit and might be used to de
fray expenses of a new survey. The
congressional report 1x11 such mat
ters for the year 1900, showed that
the balance had been returned to the
United States treasury, therefore an
rher appropriation would be neces
sary, which means at least a consid
erablo delay.
The secretary read the outline of
the proposed advertising folders to
be issued by the club, and after some
discussion it was referred to the com
mittee on publication for revision;
they were also requested to find what
nart of the $25 per month, furnished
by the county for advertising pur-.
poses would be allowed the Siuslaw
section. Florence West.

IS STILL INCUVIMED
Special, to The Guard.
Portland, April 20, The $100
prize offer made by the Columbia
Steel Company, of Portland, through
the Oregon Development League, for
sand testing 98 per cent pure silica
and free from iron oxides, for use ln
steel manufacturing, excited tremen
dous interest throughout Oregon
Washington, California, Idaho and
Montnna. Hundreds of samoles were
received, Some of the sand was too
fine, some too coarse, the grains of
some were angular, while other sam
ples were clay or building sand and
not silica at all. Some exceptionally
promising samples came from the
Inland Empire, but though ranking
a splendid analysis, failed to make
good when put to the actual test in
the steel foundry.
The prize money Is still waiting for
a winner. '
