band of Alice M. Stearns, aged 64
years, H months.
Mr. Stearns was not sick hint! and
Ms death came as a grent shock
(o hla wlfo, children and inacy

The funeral wes held on Sunday
afternoon at 2:30, The services were
conducted by Hev. Krsklne, of Oo-
burg, and the old sildlers took
charge of the remains at th" grave.
He was laid at rest in the Odd r't-l-lows'
cemetery.
Deceased was born at Amsterdam,
Montgomery county, New York. lie
Win married to Alice Whitlaw about
INCH; to thfm nine children .were
born, an.l six still live to mourn
his low. He "also has one sister,
Mrs. Jennie Snyder, of Coburg, and
two brothers to survive him.
Mr. Stearns came west with his
parents and settled In Kreeborn coun
ty, Minnesota, In 1KT9. Ms tnilsed

country until the close of the war of
the rebellion, being discharged In
August, lsil.l. Ho served a term

ing I hero the other night as follows:
"This audience is larger and more
enthusiastic than any I have ever
seen in Oregon or California," t--alil

"It has taken the conceit out of me
and I am reluctant to return to Ki:
gene." Mr. Ilartog then plunged In
to a detail of benefits derived
from civic Improvements, Illustrating
his remarks with examples drawn
from lOugene. He used pointed epi
grams in touching upon different
phases of "boosting," and It tickled
the audience Immensely. He called
special attention to the great advan

time card enroute to Orugon, but
when ho got a first glimpse of our
streets last fall ho shivered. He sug
gested a number of plans for beau
tifying tho city, principal among
which was the planting of roses upon
