Kast Ninth street between Willamette
and Oak was tapped by the street
commissioner's force today for the
purpose of cleaning It out before the
pavement is laid. This sewer has
given a great deal of trouble duriirg
the past few years, and It was
thought best to remedy the difficulty
now so that the pavement will not
have to -be torn up at some future
time. An excavation nine feet deep
and clear across the street had to be
made.

Washington, March 31. After
having gone through many changes,
the paragraph In the agricultural ap
priation bill relating to the bureau of
forestry was finally passed by the
house, Mondell, of Wyoming, and
Smith, of California; continuing their
attacks upon the bureau, supported
by Bonynge, of Colorado, and Cush
man, of Washington. These em
braced the charges that the bureau
had created tlmbr monopolies In fa
vor of the large corporations, and
Illegally assumed, jurisdiction over
water rights belonging to Western
states, and had juggled with figures
in order to obtain larg appropria
tions from congress. The work of
the bureau was vigorously defended
by Hepburn, of Iowa, and Scott, of
Kansas. Mondell also charged the
committee on agriculture with being
In a reckless state of mind when It al

more than had been estimated for.
