Representative Hawlev, of Ore
gon, delivered his maiden speech in
the notice yesterday in favor of the
F-til'on railroad land grant resolu
tion. Not only did he succeed in
explaining to the house clearly and
concisely why it is necessary for
congress to pass the resolutions, but
he demonstrated to his colleagues that,
he possesses those qualities which
make men useful in the house of
representatives. Though he spoke
only half an hour, he covered the
ground fully and at the conclusion
of his remarks he was heartily ap
ulated by many of his colleagues, in
cluding Representative Dalzell, who
followed him closely throughout his
talk. .
Jack Milne and Charles M. Cline
were lined $150 each at Corvallls for
violating the local option law. Cllne
did not appear and his $1000 bond
was forfeited. Cline attempted to
operate a "blind pig" under the guise
of the "Corvallis Commerelnl Club."
The case has been In the courts for
three years.

of the Peace Young Imposed a fine

Tho Cottage Grove match factory,
J. E. Kox, manager. Is now rendv, or

pects to turn out the. fint match run
next week. He bud some trouble get
ting an expert match maker, but has
at last succeeded. The block match
