Eugene people of the Catholic
faith will henceforth find the be
trothal and marriage laws of the
church more exacting than In the
past. The following ahstraet at thr
lawn as they will exist after Easter
haB Just been pnbllfhed "V order of
Archbishop Alexand'-r Christie:
F.llKlleltielltH.
First Every formal matrimonial
engagement after Easter must be In
writing." although there is no necen
sity nor obligation to enter into for
mal engagement before marriage.
Second In the eyes of the church
and bernre (lod, private betrothal af
ter Easter between Catholic partie'
or between fallen-awav Catholics, be
gets no matrimonial obligation what
ever, because the church decrees thn'
every pro-nuptial contract is void
unless It is written and duly attested
Third Parties wishing to becomr
engaged must sign the pre-nuutia'
contract and have the bishon or their
pastor witness It. In the absence of
the bishop or duly authorized priest
two witnesses may sign the agree
ment. If one or both of those to be
engaged cannot write, this should bp
noted, and three lay wltn89es must
sign the engagement In the absence
of the bishon or parish priest.
Fourth These engagements should
bo encouraged. If maie pome months
before marriage they will help to
stop hasty alliances which are thr
cause of so many divorces outside of
the church and of so many unhappy
marriages among Catholics.
Fifth This written contract would
furnish good grounds In our civil
courts for breach of promise suits.
Sixth Protestants and all who
'have not been baptized In the Catho
j lie faith are not subjects of this law,
hence their private contracts bind.
ior me simple reason iiixi ne cnnrai
has not made these conditions under
which they must enter luto an en
gagement. Seventh Al Ifallen-away Catho
lics, whother they have become Prot
estants or Infidels, are bound by the
lnw. The church, like the state, can
hind her refractory subjects.

A fair-sized house greeted "Thr
Burgomaster" at the Eugeno theatn
last night. As to the play Itself, thr
excellence of the actors has made it r
good one, and not the author of th'
book. While there are a few catch?
numbers In the music, and perhap'
as a wholo It might be consider
nopular, yet, compared with the com
positions of Arthur Sullivan. Audrai
Leeoq and Planquette, our present
composers, like Hamlet's crab, havi
been crawling backward.

In a very difficult effort of showing
womanly modesty In male attire. She
