MEETING PROVES
GREAT SUCCESS
I Pittsburg, March 12. The last

! slonary Movement endifd with enthu
' sluani. Ur. William Douglas Mac-
Kenzle, president of the Hartford
I Theological Seminary of Hartford,
I Conn., spoke on missionary education
!in the life of the church. He said
In part:
I "The first apostles and their fol
t lowers required enlightenment as to
me relation 01 me bwbcci .'
world. It took long centuries to
cover even Europe with the Christian
name and life. Mission progress In
Asia, moving at first over wide re
gions, was suddenly repelled, and al
most swept out of existence by the
tremendous tide of Mohammedanism,
and not. long after this desolating
faith had locked Christianity within
the continent of Europe. Then In
that continent It turned to the mighty
task of creating a Christian civiliz
ation. Gradually it permeated all
classes, transforming their concep
tions of human experience and hu
man destiny, and at last In Europe
and North America this religion holds
tho field alone.
"To carry Christianity, therefore,
to tho heathen world In the nine
teenth and twentieth centuries Is not
to carry the solitary grandeur cf the
cross of Jesus, but to carry with it
the age-long fruits of that cross In
the civilization of the Western world.
So the work Is being done, not by
solitary representatives, moving from
place to place, but by the establish
ment of Christian homes and Chris
tian social institutions. This, of
course, has thrown the matter of
their supper', back on the church as
a whole. The molern movement is
hns made dependent npm the co-operation
of ell the private members
of the churches."
