Concerning the reply made by the
stutj grange lo the University of Ore
gon Alumni appeal for the State Unl-
vedsity, President I. L. Campbell
Campbell made the following state
ment:
'As I have not seen tho full text of
the reply filed In answer to the state
ment (Hailed by the eomnilttee of the
alumni of the University of Orogon,
but only the extracts printed In the
newspapers, I cannot express a very
definite opinion as to the merits of
the arguments in advance. The flg-
ire used by the alumni committee
In their statement were fair and ac-
urate as fur as 1 can judge. It Is
clearly stated In the committee argu
ment that the total number Of stu
dents. Including those In the depart
ments or law and eindlclne. Is used
In making (hp cumparisoh of pur cap
ila expenses of the stute, for tho rea
son that the reports of other uni
versities use slmllur figures, and do
not segregate In their funds 'the
amounts apportioned to the differ-
nt departments. The approxima
tion to the per cnpltn cost In the varl-
inx Institution seemed to me a fairly
accurate one. and It shows the unlver-
ilty to be at the botoni of tho list.
The estimate Is made on the basis of
tho new appropriation, mid not on
the basis uf I he present appropria
tion of 147,1)00.
' As to, tho question of the courses
of study at the agricultural college
and tho University, those are details
that can easily be arranged, either
by the boards of regunts of the two
Institutions or by tho state legisla
ture. If necessary. Tho relationships
existing between the college and the
University are very friendly, and
there should be no difficulty tn
reaching thoroughly satisfactory
agreements.
"As fai" as I have known, no un
due or nufulr Influence was brought
to bear In the legislature by the
friends of the University In securing
tho passage of the trppropriation bill.
A large delegation of the members of
the legislature visited the Unlversnty
and examined Into Its needs In person
1 ho budget of expenditures for sev
eral years to come was explained to
each member as thoroughly as possi
ble, and the general opinion of those
who looked Into the matter was that
the appropriation asked for was a
very reasonable one In view of the ur
gent lioni) nt the University for addi
tional buildings and equipment. The
Intention of the friends of the Uni
versity was to rely upon the strength
of the case presented. The bill car
ried by so overwhelming a majority
that there would seem to have been
no need of anything but a clear state
ment nud fair argument.
"The simple fact Is that the Uni
versity Is nt present receiving very
meagre support from the state and
that It must be either given a larger
appropriation or practically close Its
doors against the increasingly large
number of students who are each
year applying fur ndmlasion. The
number of high schools In the state
Is Increasing rapidly, and they are
ending a larger number of graduates
to the University each year. The
state should not make a pretense of
providing adequately for these yong
men and women when In reality not
doing so."

Tuesday, March 3, at the Eugene
theatre we arc to see the Kirk La
Bhelle dramatization of Owen ls-
ter'e novel, "The Virginian." For a
olav ivnlrul of the West. "The Vir
ginian" has been adjudged one of the
best that has been produced, rroui
the first to the last scene the play
teems with that breeiy ranch atmos
nhere that obtained In the Wyoming
cattle country a quarter of a century
ago, when ranch owners ana cow
nunchora were the leading lights and
cattle thieves the only criminals. It
Is small wonder that the play has not
only been a monetary but an artistic
success, for few dramas on the stage
today more closoly follow the orig
inal story and yet maintain the thread
of the plot in such an absorbingly In
teresting manner. W. 8. Hart, who
playa the nameless cowboy. Is known
to have won unstinted praise for his
conception of Wlstar's hero. His In
terpretation xt the character, we are
told, Is In strict accordance with the
author's Ideas. Frank Campeau as
Trampas is Is exceptionally good.
OATKOPATHY IS
. HCIENCK OF IT& OWN
There are but few people who have
not heard, of Osteopathy, also ot
some of ts achievements. But there
are far too many who have accredit
ed It with being good for only those
conditions from which they have
been cured, or which have come un
der their Immediate observation.
Not in frequently there Is mutual
surprise when one man who was
cured of eye trouble meets another
who was cured of constipation. The
above Is a homely illustration, hut
It only shows that neither was cu
rious enough to learn the possibil
ities of Osteopathy 'while being treat
ed for their respective conditions.
They may have been persuaded to
undergo Osteopathic treatment only
because a friend bad been cured or
a like condition.
You may be one of those who do
not know that Osteopathy Is Intend
ed for ither conditions than those
you have already beard of as having
been treated successfully. If so, re
member that It the principles of Os
teopathy are right, It Is a science of
Its own and a complete Bystem ot
treating disease, and has been recog
nized as such by legislative enact
ments In more than two-thirds of the
states In the Union.

BIG BASKETBALL
GAME TOMORROW
The last game of the basketball
season will be pulled off tomorrow
night at the armory, when me uni
versity of Oregon team meets the
champion five from Muscatine, Iowa.
This game promises to be the fastest
of the season, as the 'varsity boys
have had a good rest after their hard
Washineton trip, and will put up the
game of their lives. The team gained
much valuable experience in the
many games played on the trip, and
will make a much better snowing
than at the first of the season. The
Muscatine team has an enviable rec
ord of having won forty-eight out of
fifty-five games played. This team
has been together for four years, and
plays like a machine. It will be a
sight worth seeing to see them work.
A preliminary game will be played.
