Docs human health depend on one
orftan alone? Thin question la be
contliiK widely discussed since L. T.
Cooper flrat advanced lilt theory that
the stomach is the true Beat of life
and all health dependent upon It.
Mr. Cooper, who has met with re
markable gucfass in the sain of his
new medicine, believes tliut the stom
ach Is responsible for moat sickness,
and that this orKn Ik weak In the
present generation. While dlsciisHluK
this theory recently, he unld: "I am
asked time and attain to tell why my
nieillr lne him made such a record
wherever I have Introduced It. My
answer always Is, "because It re
stores the sUuiinch to n norma con
dition.' So one will deny that to
day there are more half-sick men and
women than over before. Nothing
critical KcetiiH to be the matter with
them. They are Just hull-sick -muse
of the time. They don't know really
what is liie matter with them. I have
talked with thousands duiiiiK the
pant two y.'ars and few hided knev
what their trouble was. One mid
nervousness, another aald kidney
trouble, another liver complaint,
some constipation, or hc-jrl trouble
or limn trouble. Manyihad treated,'
as they called II, far most of these;
diseases at different times. A very;
common complaint Is 'ail run down'
or 'llrcd ull the time,' or 'no appe
tite.' "
"I know positively that every bit
ef this chronic III health is c.,ii, J,
by stomach trouble, and nothing else.'
My New Discovery puis the stomach !
In sound condition In about six
weeks. Mighty few people cun "
sick with a sound digestion. That Is
why rny medicine is selling at such
a tremendous rate. I have, con
vinced many thousand.'! of t"uiil
that these things aro so, and tho
number Is growing by leaps and
bounds."
Anionic more recent converts to
Mr. Comer's beliefs Is Mr. Kdgar I,.
Hinds, living; at 6 Tappan Street, Kv. '
erett, Mass. Mr. Hindu has this to
say on the sublect:
"I huve suffered with stomneh
trouble for eight years. I was not
sick enough to lie In bed, but Just
felt bnd all the time. My greatest
trouble was Unit I always felt thel,
would get tip In the morning feeling
as tired as when I went to lied.
"I had a very Irregular nppoil'e,
and was troubled, with dizzy pe!h.
If 1 nlnod for any length of time, 1
would hfive a dull pain In the I we.
part of my back. I was nervous and
felt all the time an though sonielhlnK'
terrible was going lo happen. I tried
many klnds'of medicine, but nothing,
ever helped me. ,
"I had about given up all hope of
ever being In good health again, i
when I lieard so much of Cooper :in 1 i
decided to try his medicine. I tjok J
one bottle of his New Discovery and
was greatly surprised at the result. I
gained 12 pounds In a few weeks.
I cun now eat anything I wish, and
feel llko a new man. I cheerfully
recommend this medicine to all suf
ferers from stomach trouble."
' It Is worth anyone's time, who Is
not enjoying Rood health, to learn I
of Mr. Cooper's wonderful prepara

Persistent rumors have br:en afloat
In Kugene during the Inst few days
to the effect that the three big saw
mills owned and operated by the
Souiilhern Pacific Company at Mar
cola will at once be closed, order
having been received from headquar
ters to clean up the ynrds and pre
pnre for a long shut dgwn. The Ouard
has endeavored to trace these rumors
down to their origin, but so far has
been unable to do so. Men coming
down on last evening's train from
Marcola say they think the report Is
true, us the company has already laid
off the fullers and buckers in the log
ging camps, und preparations are
seemingly being made to close the
mills down. On the other hand, J. D.
Klelds, of the Ax Hilly department
store, which conducts n branch store
at .Marcola, Ktates that when he was
there Bunday there were no Indica

laying off of these men In the woods.

These buyers represent the two larg

IN SEARCH OF A
FATHER.
Years ago a man and bis wife and
boy baby settled In a village In New
England and set up housekeeping in
a small way. Why they cbose to make
the place their borne no one knew.
Neither worked for a living, but they
did not appeur to be In want of fund
Their station seemed to be that of
upper servants.
The child. Arthur, as he grew from
babyhood to boyhood, was of a widely
different type from bis parents. While
they were homely, he was handsome;
while they were dark, he was fair;
while they were of a coarse grain,
there was that about bin) okln to the
manner born.
Finally the source from which tbey
drew their Income seemed to be failing
them. The man Tralnor was his name
-made frequent trips somewhere, no
one knew where, and on bis return the
family's finances seemed to have Im
proved, but only temporarily. At last
the wotiinn (lied. After ber death the
father disappeared, leaving his son.
now about thirteen years old. to shift
for himself. lie had not been required
to work and. now that he was thrown
on his own resources, knew not what
to do. He desired to find his father
with n- view to having lila wants pro
vided for. as before. He wandered
about aimlessly, doing odd Jobs and
eking out a miserable existence.
Two years had passed lu this way
when one day while he was at work In
a field he saw his futher drive by In a
buggy. The boy ran to the fence and
called, but did not succeed In making
himself lieard. Running after the bug
gy, he followed It for miles, uow losing
It, now regaining sight of It. till at last
he saw it turn Into a handsome coun
try place.
Arthur was by this time exhausted,
so be sat down on a stone to catch bis
breath, keeping bis eye on the place
bis father had entered. It was a
sightly place, the house being large
and tbe grounds spacious. He won
dered who lived there and why his
father went there. How beautiful life
must be to one wbo could cull such a
pluce home! As soon as he bnd re
gained bis wind he got up and rnu on.
The ptace was more than a mile away,
and be was some time iu reaching it.
When he did he entered a large gate
way with a massive stone pillar on
either side and followed a winding
driveway to the house. The horse bis
father had driven was hitched to a
post before the front porch.
Suddenly the front door opened, and
an old gentleman ushered Trainer out,
saying:
"Not n cent! Kind the child and I'll
square the account with n thousand
dollars, but till theu never let me see
your face aguin."
Suddenly Trainor caught sight of
the boy.
"Why, Arthur!" he exclaimed. Then,
turning to the old mini, he sulci : "There
he is. Now you may atone for your
villainy."
The old man stood staring nt the
handsome boy, all ragged as be was,
and gasped:
"Is that my grandson?"
"Ho Is. He's your daughter's son
and your grandson." Then to Arthur:
"My boy. I'm not your father. This
old gentleman will tell you who you
are."
Tho old man took the boy in bis
arms, then, running into the house,
called:
"Alice, your boy is here!"
Iu a moment, n lady of middle age
mil down a winding staircase, and, buo
Ing the astonished Arthur, she took
him lu her arms auj would not release
hi in.
Some eighteen years before Alice
Archer had run away from home to
umrry n man her father disliked. Her
father had followed her and succeeded
In getting her back to his home, where
he kept her a quasi prisoner. A child
was born, und Mr. Archer made up his
mind to get rid of It. Giving the baby
to Trnlnor and his wife, who had been
his servants, be agreed to furnish them
w ith money as long ns they needed it.
But Trainer lecnuie so Importuuate
that Mr. Archer was obliged to shut
off a part of the supply nml linally all.
The man Alice Archer had married
died, and the mother at last prevailed
upon her father to restore her child.
But by this time Trainor had deserted
t!ie boy and lost track of him. After
this Mr. Archer refused to pay Trainor
any more money till he produced the
boy. But en the day Arthur came
home bis grandfather paid Trainor a
lump sum on condition that lie would
use It to leave the country never to
return.
