KuKene people who have visited
tho Iiiwlt Sluslaw rountry during the
winter state that the citizens of that
section of tho county are very lma
tleut with KiiKcne on account of the
apparent lack of Interest taken by
(he city In reKiird to transportation
facilities for ihe Sluslaw valley. As
slated by V. K. Kisk, In an Interview
prlnt'.d III yesterday's Guard, tho peo
ple of Florence and tho other towns
aloni? tho coast are KlvInK Stephen
Carver all tho cncoiiraiienient possi
ble for the extension of his Aisea
railroad from Corvallls to that part
of the state, seeing- no immediate re
lief In sight from ICiiKcne. The line
Is being constructed as rapidly as the
winter weather will permit. It has
been graded for fifteen or twenty
miles out of Corvallls, and the rails
have been luld for a number of miles.
No doubt the road will be pushed on
to tidewater, via the Lake Creek val
ley, which Is also tributary to Eu
gene, but the trade of which will be
lost to this city after the line Is com
pleted. A Kline no citizen who has consid
erable property on the lower Sluslaw
and who baa worked for a long time
for the advancement of that portion
of the county, today told The Guard
that a Coos Hay man last fall engaged
tiUUO boxes of apples from the far
mers adong the Sluslaw for shipment
to Marshfleld, but on account of the
alinuls on the bar at the mouth of the
river, thereby preventing vessels from
coming to Florence, It was Impossi
ble to deliver the apples and they rot
ted. There was a Iosb of perhaps
1 12,000, as tho apples will easily sell
for 12 a box, not to mention losses
In other lines of trado on account' of
lack of transportation facilities.
If the harbor Improvements that
were star'!.!', so'uo twelve or fifteen
years ago had been cr.mplyt ed, or If
n line . I railroad harf been extended
thriugh that country this loss would
not have ocurred and the lower Slus
law valle jrould have been one of
the richest fruit-growing anil lumber
ing sections In the United States.
EUGENE A.nFaLBANy"
PLAY BASKETBALL
Bilurd.iV evening tho laat basket
bull game of this season .will be play
ed In the armory between the high
r.-'hi'l. of F.ugeno nnd Albany. This
will be no slow game, as Albany's
team has Improved to such an ex
tent Hint I hey feel that they are able
to doleat Salem In a g:ime with then)
Friday. It' they do and F.ugene beats
Albany Saturday evening, F.ugcuo
will have second place In the league.
As It now stands, however, Koseburg,
or course, has first place, and Kugene
nnd Salem are tied for second, Al
bany being lust.
The stupendous scale . on which
I Charles H. Ilanford's productions are
; made have been, from sea.son V Kja"
j8 )n, the subject of Increased admira
. tion and wonder. Kach presentation
he makes is designed to eclipse Its
I predecessor In brilliancy of effect
iand elaboration of detail. It Is an
other evidence of Shakespeare's com
prehensive genius that the actor is
not obliged to depart from his plays
for material for unlimited scenic ex
ploitation. It has been argued that
but little scenery was employed In
the day of Klizabnthan drama; but
there have been skeptics on this point.
Certain It Is that no plays lend them
selves more splendidly to the pur
poses of the scenic, artist and costum
er, as well as of the actor, than those
of Shakespeare. One of the most
striking of the great poet's scenic
dramas Is "Antony and Cleopatra,"
i which Mr. Ilanlord selects as his sub
1 Ject for a spectacular revival this sea
son. It Is particularly fitting that
Mr. Han ford should follow his pro
duction of "Julius Caesar," which
created such a profound impression
last winter, with the story of the Ro
man warrior's historic armour with
Egypt's queen. The subject has been
one of rare fascination for the gen
ius that makes the stage Its meduim
i of expression. The greatest players
have lent their talents to the two
proles which give the play Its title, and
celebrated authors have time and
'time again striven to add something
'new to the story, only to be eclipsed
by the one great play dealing wLth
tho topic. Like all his other reprc
! dentations, this latest contribution
to theatric entertainment by Mr. Han
; ford will he dominated by the spirit
of modernlBm. This does not Imply
that the performance will be found
lacking in respect for the highest tra
'dltlons associated with it, or that a
garbled and mutilated texa will be
thrust before the public.

! Blair street addition property Is
sure to double in value within the
next two years. Two electric rail
' ways are coming up the valley from
Portland and both of them must en
;,ter the city from the west, and the
line that will tap the Sluslaw coun
try can not go out In any other dl
, rectlon. As sure as water runs down
hill, Kugene must build down the
valley because tho business Is
there.
There are both acreage tracts and
lnrge lots In this addition, only, a
mile from the haziness center and
three blocks from the Geary public
school.
Prices are very reasonable and you
may make your own terniB, a small
