The post-card business Is attracting
the attention of the postal depart
ment A million post cards are mail
ed every day In this country, and
about 60,000 a day go to the dead
letter office where they are burned,
such cards being of an objectlonal
and . obscene character. The post
card craze hits become widespread,
and some of the pictures are unfit
for some old people to look at, to
say nothing about the children. Yet,
In legitimate and decent, lines, post
cards iu-e all right,, and should he

We take It that in some respects
both sides of the house look alike to
Congressman Nelson, of Wisconsin,
who declared in a speech attacking
the rules- that the minority were "ab-
isoliitely b ;lpless," and that the ma
jority "have to obey the will of the
speaker"; also that, though he is n
Republican, Mr. Nelson Is not a Can
non man. 1
The horticultural edition of the
Medford Tribune, recently Issued, was
a splendid special number devoted to
the fruit-growing Interests of Jack
son c ity. It was well gotten up
and profusely illustrated, making It
a splendid advertisement for -Medford
and Its tribuftiry .country.
Political button-makers have pick

leas: oi l.ucia raiia, anil pet the
names -S the villa sc.- lassit s into a
village urn, and then each was claim
ed by t.ie turtuimte drawer ot her
name.
It is said by authority wc respect
that "in the (lays of Lamb, that on
each February fourteenth neighbors
and friends met, and that tile names
of the ladies assembled were put on
slips of paper and placed into a recep
tael?, from which the men drew them
out one by .one. and the lady each
drew was his valentine lor It.e year."
One man caused much merriment
when he drew his wife's name; the
old sinner says "it will cost me $5,
but It will keep the money In the
family, for that sum I must have laid
out for a present, if I had drawn au
other for my valentine."
Today, in the twentieth rentury, St.
Valentine's day enjoys the Inward
spiritual grace It did in the early
years of 1800, or as far back as 1600,
but the outward form has undergone
many changes, as the Illustrations of
those years will show. y ,
Valentines have touched the hearts
of our best writers, as one may .find
from the writings of Lamb, of Chau
cer, and of Shakespeare, as well as
many others. Some of those of onr
forefathers' time are quaint and
sweet, and must have caused many a
heart to beat the faster as she real
ized It was she alone who was clrosen
as the valentine by the one whom
she loved best In all the world. It is
good that Valentines are still In use;
it is one of the dainty customs of the
ages when chivalry reigned and which
today conveys the wishes or the sen
timents of the donor to friend or
sweetheart. Both sexcr: interchange
the dainty missiles on February 14 in
this year of grace' 1 OilS, with the
same spirit that prompted the happy
swain and gentle lady in the centur
ies of the past. Exchange.
