Portland, Feb. S. Former United
States District Attorney John H. Hall,
Indicted for conspiring with the Duttu
Creek Land, Livestock and Lumber
Company to maintain an illegal fence
which enclosed twenty thousand
acres of public land In Wheeler coun
ty, was today found guilty by the
Jury.
This trial had been In progress
since January 13, and was bitterly
fought on both sides. Three hours
; nnd ten ml nines ufior receiving the
1 instructions of Judge Hunt last night!
the Jury arrived at a decision nnd at I
11:30 this morning a sealed verdict I
was returned, which was opeped at 10
o'clock this morning.
Hall appeared much surprised by
j the verdict of the Jury and expressed
1 his belief that it was based upon mat-j
; tars which had no bearing on the casoi
nud which he did not know would bo
i Introduced. He declared his con-
j science was free In the matter.
' His attorney gave notice of appeal. '
The offense In punishable by a fino
not exceeding $10,000 or Imprison
ment not exceeding two years.
Sentence was suspended for tho
present, Hall's nttorney being given
until May 1st to prepare a bill of ex
ceptions. There wore twelve Individuals In
dicted on this conspiracy charge, but
Hall was the only one tried, the oth
ers having pleaded guilty or having
been given an Immunity bath as a re
ward for having testified for tho
prosecution.

James 11. Yates and son, Joshua It.
Yates, the Courthouse lodging house
property on Kast Seventh sereet, di
rectly in the rear of the courthouse,
for $S000. Mr. Yates, Jr., has been
conducting the lodging house for
some time past, having bought the
business from Ed Howe.
The, lot, as described in the deed,
consists of lot 6, block 7, Skinner's
donation to Eugene; also as follows:
Beginning at the southwest corner of
said lot, thence running south 34
feet, east 80 feet, north 34 feet
thenre to the southeast corner of said
lot, thence west along the south line
of the lot 80 feet, being in extent 34x
80 feet.
The land Is covered by the olil
courthouse, and another two-story
frame building recently built, both
of which lire connected and used for
a lodging house.

ADVERTISING
Tho county commissioners' court
today made an order appropriating
the sum of $25 per month for tho
months of February, March. April,
May, Juno, July, August, September,
October and November, 1908, for the
purpose of printing and distributing
pamphlets, circulars and advertise
ments, making known the various ag
ricultural, horticultural, mining,
manufacturing, commercial and other
resources of tho county. O. W. Grif
fin, A. C. Dixon and K. O. Potter were
named 11s a committee for tho pur
pose of applying the fund to the pur
poses named and to execute the
vouchers for the same.
The appropriation was made at the
request of a large number of citizens
all over the county who petitioned the
court at the Instance of the Eugene
Commercial Club.
