Ing down stairs at the Dixon
residence Saturday ;venlnR.
The lady had gone upstairs to
attend her husband, who was
sick. No one saw her fall but
her dauKhter heard her, and
when she reached the pros-
trnte form at the foot of the
stairs life was almost
extinct. She expired a
few minutes afterward.
No bones were broken.
It is supposed that she died
from heart trouble, caused by
her fall and rapid descent
down the stairs. Mrs. Tooth-
nker was aired 72 years. Tho
funeral was held Monday
with interment in the Laurel
drove cemetery. Kev. 1-:. J.
Kmmons conducted the ser-
vices.

Mrs. J. V. Shumate today sold her
millinery business located in the Rfs
don block on East Ninth street to
Mrs. Ida Bolton and Miss Leone Jen
kins, both of this city, and the firm
name will be known as Bolton & Jen
kins. The new owners have already
taken possession of the place and will
! reopen it some time about the first of
inext month or at the time of the an
jnual spring opening. They will go
I to Portland in a fpw days and pur
tchuse a complete stock and when the
store is re-opened it will enrrv one of
the most e:.ii:oleie lines of millinery
in the state.
Mrs. Bolton and Miss Jenkins are
experienced milliners, having been
professional trimmers for the past
several years, Mrs. Bolton having
spent the last two seasons in the larg'
est store at North Yakima, Wash.,
and Miss Jenkins having been at La
Grande the past season. They have
many friends here who will be glad
to hear of their venture and who will
wish them an abundance of success.
Mrs. Shumate will retire from the
millinery business entirely, and enjoy
a well-earned rest. She will devote
some attention to a 70-acre tract of
land which she has recently purchas
ed near CoburK and which she will set
to English walnuts.

altogether strong actor for a part1,
upon which depends the success of
the performance in its entirety. It
may be said, however. In extenuation
of the shortcomings of the company,

part, that of "Patrick Drew," was
taken by an eleventh-hour substitute,!
who had but partially mastered the,

There Is much anticipation on the
part of local play-goers concerning
I the coming of the Lewis-Lake Com
ipany in "A S10O0O Beauty" at the
I local theatre on the night of Wednes
day, February 15. The thirty people
i of this organization are known from
I const to coast as comedians, singers,
and dancers, and the scenery carried
for this big aud showy production
is said to be both beautiful anil mas
sive. A novel feature will be the in-
' troduction of the electric swings miui-

girls. The seat sale will start soon. '
The cast of "the Virginian" Is
stronger than ever this season, which
reflects great credit on The Kirke
La Shelle Co. It is not uncommon
for managers to retrench and cheapen
a east after a play has been on tour
for a season or two, but In "The Vir
ginian," the Important characters,
with one or two exceptions, are play
ed by those who originated them
when the play was first produced In
New York City, The big city attrac
tion is to be an early offering at the
Eugene theatre.

As will be seen elsewhere, the
Junction City board of dtreetors will
submit a proposition to the lemil vot
ers of this district ou Saturday, Feb
ruary 15, for the purpose of hondint;
the district for the sum of $i000 for
the purpose of building and equipping
a new six-room school house, and
the purchase of a site therefor.
This proposition should meet with
the approval of every voter in the dis
trict. A new schoolhouse is absolute
ly necessary, and it is a matter of
economy to build a larger building
than Is needed just at the present
time. Three of the rooms will be
furnished nt once and the others
will be furnisned as needed.
On account of the Increased atten
dance, the board was obliged to rent
two additional rooms for which the
district pays n rental of $2 do per
school year. The furniture of these
rooms will furnish two of the rooms
in the proposed new building.
This six-room building is really a
compromise' measure as some thought
four additional rooms would be suffi
cient, while others thought it would
be best to build a building of eight
rooms, as the district not only in
town, but outside, is increasing rap
idly in population aud it is claimed
that In a few more years the entire
building would be in use. However,
the majority thought it best to erect
a six-room building, and we are of
the opinion that this is the wiser
choice. Let us all pull together iu
this matter. The building ia an ab
solute necessity and the propositnon
should receive a unanimous vote.
