the crown prince was seen to half
rise and then sink hack into his seat.
Queen Amelie Jumped up and threw
herself toward the crown prince In an
apparent effort to uve his lite at the
cost of her own, hut the prince had
already received his death wound
The police guard fired upon the as
sassins and killed two of them. The
third is believed to have committed
suicide after he was placed in jail
A strong guard was in attendance be
cause of the recent uprising In the
city and the discovery of the plot to
assassinate the premier, Franco, mid
overthrow the monarchy. But the
band of murderers had Kelecm.i .
most advantageous spot for the com
mission of the crime, for Hiev w...o
cuuceaieo irom the eyes of the party
uiuii uie venicte had come into the
i-iuca ue Lommerclo, the large
square.
Before any of the guard was aware
or nnat was iiatimnip.g, the assassins
naa leaped to the carriage mid in
stantly the fusiladeof shot rang out.
In a moment all was a terrible con
fusion, the king and crown prince be
ing shot down without the slightest
chance to save themselves. The po
lice guards sprang upon the regicides,
nit iiuiuuer oi wnom is somewhat un
certain, killed two of them and cap
tured a third, who is believed to have
committed suicide.
It is charged that one of the mur
derers was a Spaniard. The bodies
of the king and crown prince were
removed from the arsenal In the two
closed carriages to the royal palace.
An- examination or the wounds of the
king showed that three bullets had
reached their mark. One wound is
situated at the nape of the neck,, a
second In the shoulder, and the third,
which was the fatal wound, severed
the cartoid' artery.
The crown prince, who was still
breathing, but who died almost im
mediately after his admission to the
arsenal, has suffered three wounds In
the head and ches'. Two bullets
had struck I'lince Manuel.
News of the assassination swept
through the city like wildfire through
dry grass, and tonight half the popu
lation Is panic stricken, not know
ing where the nex tblow may fall.
There is the greatest dread for the
future of the country, which seems
to be on the verge of being plungpd
into the throes of revolution with
all its horros of bloodshed. Through
out the city consternation reigns and
all houses and business places are
barricaded.
The cold blooded murder has sent a
thrill of horror throughout the
country even among thoso who have
been working politically for the es
tablishment of a republic, and sorrow
is expressed on every hand at the
dreadful end of the king and crown
prince. At first blush It would seem
as though the assassination was the
work of anarchists anil not of the
repiiblh-an sympathizers. Neverthe
less tin? stirring events of the past
week have prepared the public for
siinie suirtling culiiiiiiaiiitn. The dis
covery of pint after plot, as well as
