EVIDENCE IS
DA.MAGINO TO HALL
Francis .1. Heney's cross-examination
of John II. Hall yesterday mate
rially strengthened tho rase of the
government. One letter that will be
followed by others today, was Intro
duced by Honey showing that Hall
in I9U1 and 1902, when frequent
complaints were being received
against the Unite Creek Company,
took Immediate und effective steps
toward prosecuting settlers who had
from 300 to 400 acres of government
land inclosed. The purpose of these
letters Is to show conclusively thnt
Hall did not molest Steiwer's com
pany, whose enclosure of public land
embraced about 20,000 acres. Neilh
Fiirther evidence, contradictory
of the testimony of Hall on direct ex
amination, was olTerefl by Hon ey at
last night's esslon. It consisted of a
letter written by tho department of
Justice to Hall In November, 1902, In
response to a request from tho de
partment of the Interior on the appli
cation of Special Inspector Greene,
assigning Greene to report to Hall
for the specific purpose of Investi
gating complaints of unlawful fenc
ing by W. W. Mrown In Harney nnd
Lake counties, that had been reported
to the Interior department by'Green
in the month of October, 1 902. Or-cgonluu.
