Some malicious Individual
has circulated the report that
certain candidates are slated
to win The Guard contest
prizes regardless of the num
ber of votes honestly earned
and polled by other candi
dates. Regarding this report
The Guard can only say that
it is absolutely false, and that
every candidate has an equal
show in all respects, and that
no employe of the paper is al
lowed to show partiality to
ward any candidate or take
, an undue Interest in any con
testant to the detriment of an
other. The publisher of The
Guard guarantees the abso
lute fairness of this contest,
and will pay liberally for any
reliable information tending
to show that any employe or
attache of the paper has vio
lated his instructions in this
regard.
from now on the real con
test will be waged and the
heavy polling of votes whirh
will decide the contest will
be done. . To further guar
antee absolute fairness the
votes cast will be counted at
8 o'clock p. m. daily for the
next day's publication, and at
that time any candidate or her
representative may come and
sieyhe count and be assured
of the legality of any ballots
counted. The Cuard manage
ment has no more Idea than
any outsider who will win
these prizes, owin.ir to the
large number of coupons be
ing held in reserve, and the
earnest work now being done
by all interested hut it does
know they will be awarded to
tlio candidates polling the
largest number of votes, un
der the rules of the content as

Junction and Dexter arc among !o
active ones, and the candidates of
these different places are getting
many votes. Eugene and Springfield
are battling for supremacy; each city
is working for Its most popular can
didate in a manner that has aroused
much favorable comment. Just re
member that NEW, paid-ln-advauce
subscriptions, with wuich special
votes are given, are the blows that
count, and It Is the candidates who
take every advantage of it that are

being awarded. Today we present
the picture of Miss Genevieve Howe.
I of Creswell, who up to a short time
! ago was one of the most active candi
dates in the race. Her many friends
'who reside in different towns In dis
Itrict number four, when paying their
subscriptions, always seemed to show
.a preference In her favor. There are
; many subscribers of The Guard re
! siding In or around Creswell who
would be glad to assist a andldate
for the mere asking, and now that
j the NEW special vote offer is in
j force, there is no telling but what
Miss Howe nnd her many friends
will again become active, and cap
ture the trip prize that will be award
I ed to the candidate who finishes with
I the largest number of votes in dis
jtrlct number four after the capital
prize has been awarded. It can be
'easily done. Four or five NEW one
year subscrlptionc would place .Miss
i Howe well up on the list, and, who
J can tell but what that amount of lias
i iness would be the direct cause of her
being announced the winner.
I No one in the race should feel as
: though they stand a chance of wln
; iilng. A few days or activity between
! now and February 8th will work
i wonders.
