Mrs. H. L. Glbbs and Mrs. Cue, two
new chuperone candidates, entered
the race yesterday and from all in
dications entered determined to win
the free trip to Los Angeles that will
be awarded the candidate who se
cures the largest number of votes be
fore the night of February S. Both
ladies are very well known In Eu
gene, where they have a host of warm
personal friends who will not hesi
tate to support these ladies if they
make their wants known. Up to the
present time no one chaperone can
didate has a decided advantage over
her competitor, but a great many
changes can be looked for before the
end of this week, as the best special
offer of votes will cut a big figure in
the standings.

test, irrespective of the district she
may represent.
First prize to each district To
the four young ladies who finish
with the largest number of votes to
their credit In each of the four dis
tricts, after the capital prize has been
awarded, will be given a first-class
free trip to I-os Angeles and return,
including the very best hotel accom
modations for one week while in the
city of Los Angeles, under the escort
of a chaperone. who will be a resi
dent of Lane county.
Second prize In each district.
Then to the four young ladles who
finish with the second largest num
ber of votes In each of the four dis
trict, after the capital and first
prizes have been awarded, will re
ceive a six-months' full course schol
arship at the Eugene Business Col
lege, one of the best educational In
stitutions In the slate of Oregon.
Lane county will be divided into
four districts, to which each will be
awarded at least two of the prizes
and one of the four districts will re
ceive three of the prizes, including
the grand upright piano.
District No. 1. Includes all of the
city of Eugene.
District No. 2. That part of Lane
; county south of Creswell, including

Henry Herbert, who was out hunt
ing Monday near Franklin, and was
supposed to have been lost or shot,
was found late in the evening.
The dance at L. L. Smeal's was
fine. Tell Fred that the floor won't
be so slick the next time.
The neighbors spent a pleasant
evening at Chas. Lemley's Monday
night, there being enough present to
dance. Those In attendance were as
